red212fire212 Posted January 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted January 23, 2016 Hi all, I am going on the 24th Feb Tangier/Canaries 11 night cruise and friends I am going with have been asking me what we do about money... Having read bits on here... Am I right in thinking all onboard purchases are in dollars? Do we need to take some dollars or will everything be put on the room number and paid for at the end? (is it cash in the casino?) We will be taking Euro's for when we are ashore in the canaries and other ports (not planning on spending anything when we dock in Tangier, Just a quick wonder round) Thank you in advance! flapbreaker Posted January 23, 2016 #2 Share Posted January 23, 2016 (edited) You register your credit card at check in and everything is charged to your room. You then can use your room card to make on board purchases. I don't know how it works in the casino. casofilia Posted January 23, 2016 #3 Share Posted January 23, 2016 Hi all, I am going on the 24th Feb Tangier/Canaries 11 night cruise and friends I am going with have been asking me what we do about money... Having read bits on here... Am I right in thinking all onboard purchases are in dollars? The currency on the boat is USD Do we need to take some dollars or will everything be put on the room number and paid for at the end? If you take dollars you will have to anti USD300. More logical to give them a credit card. You can always pay off the account on the last night if you want to avoid credit card charges. (is it cash in the casino?) I think you can use your room card in the casino. If you take out any cash from there it will cost you 3%. We will be taking Euro's for when we are ashore in the canaries and other ports (not planning on spending anything when we dock in Tangier, Just a quick wonder round) You can always buy OBC in USD before you board. Thank you in advance! HTH Mike
Rare KeithJenner Posted January 23, 2016 #4 Share Posted January 23, 2016 I assume that one of the reasons why the question is being asked is because you and your friends are from the UK and won't necessarily have any dollars handy. I always take dollars with me, as I usually have some anyway, but it isn't necessary. The only thing I use those dollars for is if I want to leave any cash tips. That isn't required and on the itinerary you are on, Euros would do just as well. I certainly wouldn't buy any currency specifically for it. However, as has been mentioned, I understand you do need dollars for the casino (I don't use the casino myself). You can draw dollars against your onboard account but there is a charge for doing so and perhaps there is a minimum you can draw. If you want to have a lot of money for the casino then it is probably cheaper to get the dollars before you travel, may the charge that NCL make plus any charge that your credit card company add for your final transaction being in dollars is likely to come to more than 5%. Finally, be aware that your final account will be charged by NCL to your credit card in dollars, so unless you have a credit card which doesn't charge foreign currency fees then you will be hit with them. If you spend a lot it can be worth getting a card which doesn't charge those fees.
