mommasharn Posted February 22, 2016 #1 Share Posted February 22, 2016 I plan on taking the currency of the various countries with me. However, is there a way to use a converter app without using cell phone data? When I'm looking at something, I want to understand what the price would be in American dollars, so I know if it is a good deal or not. Does anyone recommend buying a currency converter? Thanks!! GradUT Posted February 22, 2016 #2 Share Posted February 22, 2016 You can always go "old school" and just use a calculator to figure it out. Write down the exchange rates before you go--they won't change appreciably during the course of your cruise--and use a cheap pocket calculator from the dollar store to do the multiplication. Desdichado62 Posted February 22, 2016 #3 Share Posted February 22, 2016 I use an app called convert pad. Once exchange rates have been downloaded/updated you don't need internet connection to convert currencies. So update exchange rates on WiFi just before you leave or possible at the airport or on the ship and you should manage without using cell phone data (mobile broadband). MeHeartCruising Posted February 22, 2016 #4 Share Posted February 22, 2016 (edited) The offline app approach is good. I hope you find the right one. What I've done in the past is to create a little cheat sheet at home before I leave for my trip. I create a grid of what the various denominations convert to....$1, $5, $10, $20, etc. Then I do the reverse. 1 euro, 5 euro, 10 euro, etc. I do this for the currencies of my trip This way, I can glance at my grid and see that the 2750 kroner ceramic dog I might want to buy will be somewhere between $x and $y. This usually gets me close enough to walk away from the dog or purchase it. Edited February 22, 2016 by MeHeartCruising

Forgot to say that this app can also be used to convert temperatures and distance/volume/weight units between the metric/Celsius system to imperial/Fahrenheit system. dsrdsrdsr Posted February 22, 2016 #6 Share Posted February 22, 2016 If you can't do the mental arithmetic, take a piece of paper with you with the amounts written down. It's not as if you need to know the daily updated rates anyway - for you, the exchange rate remains fixed at the rate you paid for the currency.
