I promise my next thread will NOT be about food. I started the Guy's Burgers thread, and this one about the buffet. I have learned a lot!

I will say that personal hygiene IS a big concern, at any public venue. Or should I say...lack of it.

Being that I am a male, I notice the vast majority of men do NOT bother to wash their hands, after using a rest room, where ever I am it. So a buffet dining experience, you do have to consider this factor, unfortunately.

Niro virus on ships? How do you think it is transmitted?

Exactly.

One area that is vulnerable to poor hygiene habits is a casino. Slot machines require finger contact with buttons on the machines. How many hygiene lacking people, have directly physically touched those same surfaces? Just say'n.

After my two threads, I don't want to dwell on food/dining, thank you. The cruise experience involves so much more.

Thanks to everyone for their sincere imput. I have a good idea what to expect, on my Magic cruise.

Ask as many as u like, lots of opinions here and good fodder. There is good reference material on the CDC about cruise ship inspections and tracking of Noro on cruise ships as well. Carnival does very well on these.

[QUOTE=klfrodo;49201368]I have never in my life, anywhere in the world, found a buffett anything more than "adequate".

My thoughts exactly...and that includes those at swanky places on the strip in Las Vegas. It never wows me. On the ship, I can always make a salad and nibble on some sort of protein, plus as others have said, if you take something and don't like it, try something else. There are plenty of options. On my last cruise, my typical lunch was a big salad, maybe a pizza one or two days, or tacos, and fresh fruit ( love the watermelon from Blue Iguana!). I am not a pasta person so never tried that. Another good option for lunch would be the Mongolian Wok.

I always snicker when people start ragging about the bad food...I want to ask them how much weight they loss during their last cruise!

Yes, food is subjective, especially when it comes to buffets, whether on a cruise ship or land-based restaurant (like Golden Corral). What most people don't stop to think about when comparing a dinner ordered from a menu with buffet food is, food from a menu can be prepared per your preferences, (butter, no butter),(steak, rare, medium, well done) etc. And, the food is freshly cooked. Buffet food, on the other hand, is prepared in large quantities, all seasoned the same way, then kept warm in a warmer. So, if you're lucky enough to get something that's been brought out fresh from the kitchen, it will taste better than something that's been sitting in the warmer for a while. I tend to think of eating at a buffet somewhat like going to a pot luck dinner. You'll find some things you like, and some things you wouldn't even give to a dog.

I now avoid the buffet after 2 bouts with food poisoning, both times after eating at the buffet, first time aboard the Carnival Dream. There's just too much food exposed for extended periods of times with too many hands from people with dubious hygiene practices touching it.

I know I sound like a germaphobe which I'm not, but after getting sick twice, I've become more hyper-vigilant about what I eat on cruise ships and about people's behavior near the buffet. I've even noticed people exit a bathroom stall in the public bathroom and walk right up to the buffet, without washing hands or sanitizing, and start touching every serving utensil and grabbing food items with their bare hands, completely unfazed. With over 3,000 passengers onboard, you know that there's more than one idiot exposing his fellow passengers to their (no pun intended) "crappy" habits. [emoji87]

Totally agree! After spending two weeks sick and bedridden in Boston from salmonella poisoning I've become hyper vigilant about food hygiene. Severe food poisoning is no joke and I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

I'll add my yep.

I have seen so many really disgusting things done at buffets, including the straight-from-toilet-stall-to-serving-utensils behaviour that Tapi mentioned. Some people are pigs and I refuse to eat from their communal trough.

About 90% of the people I see at work don't wash their hands when leaving the bathroom. Disgusting.

Salad is good. Buffet is hit or miss. Eggs Benedict are good the first morning. After that they use salmon and I don't like it like that. HAL has about 7 different kinds of EB every morning.

Fried chicken is usually good. I take a small amount of things I might like and go back for more if it's good. The deli has good tuna salad. Get a Reuben with double meat, double sauerkraut, toasted extra long. Mongolian Wok is good. I hate the pizza. Desserts look good, most have no flavor. Key lime pie is good.

Having been on the Magic many times, I would recommend several venues. The Tandoori is wonderful. There is a small place in Ocean Plaza that has soup and sandwiches. The egg salad is terrific. Also there is a made to order salad place between the Red Frog Pub and Ocean Plaza that I really enjoy. If you like pizza, one of my favorites is the four cheese pizza at the pizza place. The buffet is all right and the omelette station is very good. You can also get fresh cooked eggs there. Enjoy your cruise!!

I have no idea how many of my co-workers do or don't wash their hands. I'm too busy doing my job to designate myself wash-room monitor.. But since you are an RN you probably notice this more than others...

Food for thought - I am often one of those people that often does not wash my hands in a public restroom. I got foot and mouth disease from a public restroom one time as a kid , and if you want to see disgusting, THAT is IT. I do however keep hand sanitizer "handy" for such uses. So if you have ever judged me, it was wrongly so.

The public sinks, soap dispensers and door handles can be covered in germs...along with everything else we touch from handrails, to elevator buttons to keyboards. Germs are everywhere and the science shows as long as you wash your hands or sanitize them often, particularly before eating, THAT is how you reduce your risk of getting sick.

It's hard not to notice when, as one is washing one's hands in the public restroom, one hears the flush, the stall door opens, then a "lady" comes out of the stall, maybe stops to primp in the mirror, and then strolls right out of the bathroom. No water, no soap, no pretending to wash her hands, even, as some will. I have seen this over and over again.

Maybe I witness it more than others because I actually wash my hands properly - spending the appropriate amount of time lathering and scrubbing and rinsing. It allows plenty of time for several pigs to flush and stroll past.

One doesn't have to be a "washroom monitor" to notice this - just present long enough and not oblivious.

I started the thread, inquiring about Guy's Burgers. There was an awesome response, with many offering their opinions, and I greatly appreciate your imput.

I have not cruised with Carnival, in many years. Have a Magic cruise booked.

During my recent thread, some comments were made, that people "avoided" the buffet-due to the quality of food. And seeked other dining options.

Now my question is: Is the buffet on Carnival (Magic),

Going to be that unappealing?

*** I realize that discussion of food is subjective. But I have read very few comments on any thread, praising the buffet offerings.

I have taken seven cruises, on three different cruise lines, and found the buffets adequate. Always a variety of options. I have not cruised in last three years.

***** For the veteran cruisers out there, has the buffet quality declined over the years? Number of options decreased? Or is it because of all the newer dining options, that cause the buffet's appeal to diminish?

In our experience, the buffet is a 4/10. EXCEPT on Caribbean day. They have delicious jerk chicken and coconut bread. I am always so shocked that it's the same buffet that serves sub-par food most of the time. The salad bar is good and the deli is delicious. The desserts always look pretty but I never like them. We go to the MDR for all brunches, dinners and use the buffet/side restaurants for lunches.

You are completely right though, food is incredibly subjective.

we are extremely early breakfast eaters so we use the buffet for breakfast before the crowd; omelets and meat. after that, the buffet SUCKS. we eat lunch off the ship except sea days, use the MDR for dinner or do guys or pizza (now i'm hearing that the magic's new pizza sucks, as well).

carnival's buffet is like cafeteria food--you might get a favorite once or twice but the rest is garbage.

Ewwwww. Hand sanitizer does not remove fecal matter from your hands. Nor does it kill most viruses or even all bacteria. Hand sanitizer is NOT a substitute for proper hygiene. You might want to check your science again.

And, if proper hand washing protocol is used, including not touching the faucet handles, towel dispenser, door, etc., germs will not be reintroduced to washed hands.

I also find the buffet to be adequate. Some things are really good, others are just ok. I found most of the desserts to look much better than they actually were. Not a whole lot of flavor in some of them. But there were a few that I really liked. Very hit or miss.

For our upcoming cruise, we specifically picked one that had the upgrades so that we'd have new food options. Very much looking forward to trying Guys, Blue Iguana, and Cucina del Capitano for lunch!

I enjoy the buffet for breakfast. The omelettes are great and so are the breakfast potatoes, fruits and the banana bread. For lunch I enjoy the deli, pizza or grill/Guys. Then it is the MDR for dinner. Overall I think Carnival's food is good.

How on earth you get fecal matter on your hands when making a simple trip to the bathroom beyond me. Hands touch hips to remove underwear - and nothing else at anytime - and hips to pull up underwear. I am not male nor do I have infant children anymore, so not "handling" anything!

And I have checked my science - the CDC offers it as an alternative to hand washing when soap and water aren't available - and I sure as heck don't consider a dirty, wet, gloppy sink to be "available." There is a reason you see it all over medical offices because if your hands are otherwise clean - it works.

I feel sorry for all those people whose lives are dominated by germ paranoia. You cannot possibly know why someone is not using the public restroom sink - perhaps they have some kind of disease or infection where they have been advised not to. I really think this a case of mind your own business and scrub the heck out of your own if you are so worried.

You really don't know the answer?? No wonder there are so many people who don't bother to wash their hands after using the bathroom!

Soooo you're telling me that when I was hunched over, with severe stomach cramps, with things shooting out of various openings in my body for hours, and considering death as a better alternative to the misery I was going through after eating something contaminated at the buffet, it was all in my head!?!?!?

You cannot possibly know why someone is not using the public restroom sink - perhaps they have some kind of disease or infection where they have been advised not to.

Pardon my ignorance, but this is the first time I've read this as a justification for bad hygiene, specially after using the bathroom to poop! If someone is so concerned about dirty faucets or door handles, grab a paper towel to open and close them, then wash your hands with warm/hot water! It's not rocket science!

And if your bad hygiene is placing my health at risk, you can be sure that it is MY business!

What Tapi said, but also:

How on earth you get fecal matter on your hands when making a simple trip to the bathroom beyond me. Hands touch hips to remove underwear - and nothing else at anytime - and hips to pull up underwear. I am not male nor do I have infant children anymore, so not "handling" anything!

OK, since you don't understand, I'll try to help you and anyone else who may be ignorant about this:

Do you touch anything in the restroom? The stall door? The door latch? The toilet paper? The flush lever? The restroom door? Well, so does everybody else. And even though you manage to handle your personal bathroom business without getting any fecal matter on your hands, do you think the drunk or the child or the idiot or the nasty slob or the parent helping the toddler before you did the same? Yes, you are "handling" things, you just don't seem to be aware of the fact. And since you seem to be so up on all the science, I suppose you're also aware of how far and how much "stuff" sprays out of the toilet when it is flushed, landing on every surrounding surface.

And I have checked my science - the CDC offers it as an alternative to hand washing when soap and water aren't available - and I sure as heck don't consider a dirty, wet, gloppy sink to be "available." There is a reason you see it all over medical offices because if your hands are otherwise clean - it works.

Right as an alternative when hand washing isn't possible, not as a substitute. Big difference. Just because hand sanitizer is better than nothing doesn't make it as good as washing. Once more, in case you haven't caught on yet, based on your proclaimed practices, your hands aren't "otherwise clean".;)

And I feel sorry for anyone who eats at the buffet after you or shakes your hand. Knowing the importance of proper hygiene is not having one's life dominated by anything. And it's not paranoia. It's something we were all supposed to have learned as children. And it's something we should all practice not only for our own sake, but for those around us. It is everybody's business. Nice try with the disease thing though.

ETA: Hand washing is a little like wearing my seatbelt while driving. I don't drive drunk, aggressively, or irresponsibly, text while I drive, etc. But I always wear my seatbelt. Not for the sake of saving me from my own foolish driving, but because of all the idiots with whom I share the road. You really should wash your hands.;)

I have eaten 1 Guy's Burger and it was very good. I am more of a salad type person but I agree 100% with Tapi about buffets so I pick and choose my food daily.

And Guys just got me an 8 day cruise for my birthday instead of the 5 day short cruise we were planning. Once my husband found out there was not a Guys on the ship we were looking at, he had me search until I found a ship with a Guys.

Odd...:rolleyes:...but I could not find a 5 day cruise with Guys so he settled on an 8 day out of Canaveral. Let's hope he never learns how to search for cruises. :D:D:D

Ok people - do you not realize that fecal matter you are obsessing over is microscopic and is EVERYWHERE - not just limited to the bathroom handles of public places. Do you realize that research shows that some of the most unsanitary objects in your own house are your own toothbrush, cell phone, computer keyboard, your remote control and the kitchen and BATHROOM SINK! If your own sink at home is loaded with fecal matter, I guarantee the public bathroom is. And the second I drop that paper towel in the basket after opening the door and pick up a tray, a glass for water, touch a chair on the lido deck - voila, I'm "contaminated" again.

Yes, I clean regularly. I shower AT LEAST once, if not twice a day, I wash my hands in places I trust, and use sanitizer in more public ones. But what I also know is that research shows that obsessing over it - and trying to constantly sanitize your environment - is actually harmful because your body does not build up and use its natural defense system.

Did you know that kids raised in homes with pets are healthier across the board? Why is that? Because they bring in all kinds of dirt and things like fecal matter and cover your kid in it. I'm sure it would probably freak you out that I intentionally my kids out of the high chair and let my dog lick the dinner off their face.

But the reality is that people who are obsessive about it are the ones that get sick the most. Yes, anyone can get a nasty case of anything. But in truth you have no way to know if it came from the elevator button, the spoon on the buffet or the fact that your waiter sneezed on your fork as he was setting the table an hour before you arrived at diner. So yes, I agree - please be clean - but also trust your body to do it's job. And stop worrying about what others do....because you aren't going to change my mind, just like I am not going to change yours. If you agree to be a "germ freak" you can call me dirty and unsanitary all you like.:D
