Potato Baskets

Many of the experience cruisers seem to mourn their passing on Celebrity. What are they? Are they really no longer available?

 

What is the big deal about them?

Hi CajunLiner,

Potato baskets are thinly sliced, weaved potatoes, usually sliced on a mandolin. You put them into a mold and deep fry them until they are "set", and then you fill them with whatever filling you want.

Celebrity used to use them on the plates, mostly as presentation, but they stopped the last couple of cruises that we've taken. It does take a little extra time, but to me, it's worth it. I always make them when my in-laws visit. They are Celebrity cruisers and they are really impressed. They don't realize how easy it is. I must admit, I am a trained chef and I have all the right equipment to make a really easily prepared meal look really elegant. But, the potato baskets are not that difficult to prepare.

potatoe baskets were deep fried little baskets made from potatoes. (waffle french fry, only thinner). They were usually filled with tiny little round potatoe balls. Delicious!

We put flowers in the baskets and set them outside. Only problem was the rain made them soggy and the ants were rather fond of them.

They were served on the Zenith in April.

They're still around but not all the time on every ship. I think it's a dying art.

Ive been on celebrity 4 times and haven't seen one yet. Would be nice to have one though.

We were recently at a Vietnamese wedding and one of the 8 courses were served in the potatoe baskets. It was some sort of shrimp dish. One of the women at the table didn't eat shrimp but she loved eating the basket.

They were served on millennium in november of last year and i have had them on century and mercury.

We had them on the Century in the fall. In fact, during the chef's demonstration, they showed us how to make them. It is quite easy if you know the tricks and have the right equipment.

ohhh...after 3 Celebrity cruises I have yet to have them...maybe on my next one?.....
