mattR Posted March 24, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Can you use Gate 8 to enter the port at Southampton or do you have to use Gate 10?
Ray66 Posted March 24, 2016 #2 Share Posted March 24, 2016 City Cruise Terminal For ease of access we suggest you enter the Port through Dock Gate 20 or you can use Dock Gate 10 or 8. Please note DOCK GATE 8 is closed between 9th August - 27th September 2015 for the Southampton Boat Show - please use either Dock Gate 10 or 20 during this period http://www.abparking.co.uk/directions
Rare John Bull Posted March 24, 2016 #3 Share Posted March 24, 2016 For the vast majority of cruisers, Gate 8 is easiest for City terminal and Gate 10 for Mayflower. But you can use either for either. Gate 10 is open & manned 24/7. Gate 8 is open only when there's a ship at City terminal. So for instance if you overnite at Holiday Inn (right alongside Gate 8) and intend to sail RCI, Celebrity, etc from City terminal, you'll see that the gate is closed and locked - but it'll be open bright & early next morning. As Ray's post, Gate 8 is also closed during the Southampton boat show, because of the layout of the show. But the dates of 9th August to 27th September quoted on APB's website are a nonsense - probably a typo, though I've been unable to talk to anyone at ABP who can confirm. The show runs 16th to 25th September, and for setting up needs a week or so pre-show and a couple of days post-show. So the correct dates when Gate 8 is unavailable are probably 9th September to 27th September. Gate 20 is at the western end of the docks, near the M271 motorway. it's used for the commercial docks so traffic is mainly bulk and container trucks. Not as convenient, and no signage for cruise terminals, but a useful rat-run if city centre traffic is screwed-up. I've used it a number of times for that reason, including during the boat show. Ocean terminal & QE11 terminal are in a totally different part of the port (Gate 4). JB :)
