Can OBC be purchased in Canadian dollars?

Last year I cruised with Royal Caribbean and we were able to add OBC in Canadian dollars before our cruise at a better exchange rate. I'm wondering ifcany Canadian cruisers out there know if Princess does this as well?

What I have found is that Princess will accept your Canadian Credit card and then do a funky exchange in the background to convert it into US$ OBC. We found this out as we paid in Cdn $, yet had US$ charges to our on-board account. They run very close to current exchange plus a little bit (~2%).

The closest I could come to an exchange rate was comparing the price of a case of water. On board currently you will pay $6.90 US$, order a case in advance and you pay $9.32 Cdn $. That works out to $1.35/0.74 as a current exchange.

But, I just made a $100 purchase of USD on-line at my bank and they charged my $1.335, it was $1.50 cheaper to get the USD from my bank than to have Princess do the exchange.

I always buy US cash every week as I get closer to the cruise, and then I can either use the cash and deposit it as OBC or when I am in port to avoid using my credit card and getting dinged for the exchange +2%.

Yes, but it will be converted in US$, You would need to check the current exchange rate for Princess.

Which will most likely be a poor rate!!!

Right now Princess is using a 1.35 factor to convert US to Cdn $'s and I checked at my bank today and it is 1.346 to buy US $ so the rates at the present time are pretty even.

The answer is yes if you paid for your cruise in canadian dollars. If you didn't then you can't. Login in to the cruise personalizer and find the onboard credits link and see what exchange rate you booked at. For our upcoming cruise we booked in when it was at 1.20 so we've been able to buy onboard credit and casino credit at that rate. So for us, our cruise personalizer shows $30 $60 and $120 to buy $25, $50 or $100 in USD onboard credit or casino credit. See what yours is. If it's better than the current bank rate or CC rate then pre-purchase. You can also pre-pay your gratuities, buy drink packages and transfers at this rate. So if you have a great rate like we do then it's worth it to pre-pay all this stuff. FYI we booked a year ago before the dollar really tanked.
