Phone apps using wifi

We will have unlimited internet on our upcoming TA on Riviera. In the past, I have used free phone apps to call my kids/grandkids a few times during the cruise. I could call their landline and often it was very clear, even from the middle of the ocean. The ones I have used in the past (Magic Jack and Google Voice, among others) are no longer in the same format. On my last cruise I was using a "free phone app" when my free use was cut off in mid sentence. Does anyone know of a free iPad phone app that they have used successfully with wifi? I know I could use FaceTime but that requires the other end being available. Thanks.

Sailed on the Riviera on March13th and needed to call into meetings all week back home, I used WhatApp and Google Hangouts via Wifi and had no major issues (i once had a two hour uninterrupted call). The wifi on the Riviera isnt great, many days it barely worked and i'd have to hunt around the ship for a stronger signal. But if you have a decent signal, there should be no issues
