What age demographic does RCI market to?

Recommended Posts

RCI is probably more family-oriented. Yes, there's more to do, and although all ages can do the activities, I think of it geared toward families. Maybe Carnival would be best if you're looking for the party atmosphere. You may also want to put Princess on your do-not-sail list with an older, more formal demographic.

I honestly had the same worry as you before my first ever cruise (I was 28 at the time) and my boyfriend was 29 at the time. We went on Oasis and had a wonderful time. I actually found there was more people under 35 then there was over 35. There were alot of families though, but we still managed to meet new friends around our age at the pool bars, casino, blaze, or the late comedy show. There is a good mix of people on the Oasis and Allure as it is a destination ship. Our table mates were significantly older than us, but we still had great conversation alot of the older cruisers are experienced ones that have great ideas about excursions and port stops!

Two years later, we're going on our second cruise ever in a little over a month on the Allure! We liked it that much.

Royal Caribbean caters too all age groups. I took my first cruise at 29 and this year will be my 4th cruise at 32. I've always went with a friend. On all my cruises, I thought there was a wide range of age groups and everyone was always so nice. Also, I noticed that there seemed to be more of a younger crowd to beachy destinations (but there was was still a nice age range). I felt as though, the smaller ships tend to get more older folks and the bigger ships may attract younger crowds since there is more to do on them. Please give it a thought to try Royal Caribbean! You won't be disappointed!

OP

age is relative. many of us who are looking forward to retirement are in better physical and mental shape than many 20 - somethings i've seen. Just because we can be classified as "old" doesn't mean we feel or act it

Sounds like you ran into snobbery/elitism vs ageism

a cruise is an expensive proposition, you need to choose wisely. However, it's not difficult to google what age bracket any cruise line attracts...fodors & frommers will pop up prominently in the links. Both good sources of info online or via their travel books to help supplement this board.

Enjoy your future travels.

My boyfriend and I really enjoyed cruising for the first time (guess it's true that it gets addicting huh?) we just won't sail on Holland America lines for another 20+ years [emoji38]

Royal Caribbean is very familiar. I'm 28, and have been cruising since 24, and I feel it perfectly meets my millennial likes. Discos are not as good as the ones on the ground, but you can socialize with many young adults, drink alcohol, dance, and do lots of activities that you can find attractive. RCI has the BEST equipped ships in terms of activities and entertainment.

I know how boring can be cruising with an older population. I did a Celebrity cruise on the Mediterranean during off-season... I simply don't want to step into a Celebrity ship till I turn 40.

My first choice is Royal due to quality of service, but Carnival and Norwegian can carry even a younger crowd, especially during summer and spring-break.

My boyfriend and I just returned from our first cruise with Holland America on their signature ship and it was horrible. It was like a floating retirement home and felt like we were onboard an assistant living facility. On a positive note we do have to say the service was excellent but the overall experience on sea days was poor because they didn't offer any activities or any good entertainment and the music by the pool was titanic music as my boyfriend would say.

We would like to try another cruise line in the future that doesn't cater to the geriatric population and are wondering if Royal Caribbean offers a wide variety of activities for all age groups. The Oasis Of The Sea, Anthem of the Sea, and Allure look like fun ships but we don't want to be stuck with mostly older people again :/

I'm just curious, but didn't you research before booking with HAL. If you had researched or asked other folks you know who have cruised would have told you HAL is geared more toward an older clientele. I think you will be pleased with Royal Caribbean because their ships have so much to offer. I'm sure you will find a cruise that will be to your liking and these boards are a wealth of information.

I heard Carnival is mostly a party ship. We want something in the middle of the road. We aren't obnoxious 20 year olds who just want to drink and party all the time but we want to have a fun time too without being annoyed. That's why we thought RC was kind of that happy medium.

We mostly cruise with Royal, but have tried other cruise lines and recently sailed with Carnival because we liked the itinerary. We had heard for years Carnival is a party ship, but you would be surprised at how family oriented they have become and there are people of all ages and there is something for everyone. Every night Carnival has the Comedy Club at different times if that is something you like and dive in movies out on the pool deck.

I don't consider 39 and 40 "old". If you were on Holland America you would be considered young and if you're into dancing and enjoying a few drinks you would be given dirty looks.. it's almost as if it wasn't "proper" or "appropriate" to enjoy yourself and company .. Not even kidding!!

I would defiantly suggest reviewing your cruise and putting your input because it honestly does make fellow cruisers more informed. Had I known that Holland America was that much of an older demographic I would have said thanks but no thanks to the family member who gifted us the cruise.

This is really an unfortunate choice of words. After all, some day if you should live long enough, you will be one of the geriatric crowd.

I definitely suggest you spend more time on Cruise Critic doing research before booking your next cruise. Keep in mind that the time of year and length of cruise is often a determining factor in the demographics you will find aboard any cruise line.

Age is not a factor when it comes to enjoying a cruise.

I think the OP's choice of words could have been more tactful, but the real problem was that it appears there were no other young people in the proper age range for the OP on this cruise.

Sometimes people spend a lot of time with what is wrong rather than finding what is right on the cruise for them. She could not get rid of the older people on the cruise, but you would think there was something to enjoy off the pool deck with the titanic music.

I think she will find a better mix of people on RCI.

Jim, I told her the exact same thing but she didn't reply to me. It just sounds so disrespectful. :( And I am in my 50's, not yet part of the demographic she is complaining about, so that's not the issue. ;)

Look at it another way. Maybe they weren't giving you dirty looks. Maybe they were remembering what it was like to be able to dance and enjoy themselves.

Did you notice her user name..."baby".

Very fitting based on her choice of words.:)

Time of year and itinerary matter too. Our honeymoon med cruise on Vision was definitely an older crowd which we expected and were fine with. Expecting my upcoming Caribbean will be much more of a mix age-wise!

Thank you to everyone who replied to this thread, minus the annoying people who wanted to complain about my "choice of words". I WASN'T asking how you felt or if offended you I simply asked what the age demographic Royal Caribbean catered to. There was a lot of great input so thanks again to those who responded appropriately!

If it makes you feel better to call me annoying and inappropriate for calling your attention to disrespectful comments you made, then go ahead.

If you weren't going to provide input pertaining to the question I asked then don't spam the thread I posted. At some point I'll be lucky enough to grow old and hopefully I won't be as stuck up as you and see the humor in things. And FYI geriatric is "appropriate" terminology ya old fart.

Congratulations. You seem to be succeeding.

Mission accomplished!

Seriously though. One cannot ignore nor should they take offence to the fact that HAL caters to a much more geriatric population than 7 day Caribbean cruises on FRI, CCL and NCL.

First of all, I'm really sad that you chose to word your comments this way. There are other, more polite ways to put things. :( Secondly, if you take a longer RCI cruise, or perhaps a Canada/New England cruise, you will absolutely find more of an older clientele on these cruises. Many of the passengers are retired and can afford to cruise, both financially, and time-wise.

As stated, though, Royal caters to all age groups on every ship. On Oasis, we saw 2 year olds and 92 year olds.

,

I agree. Probably wouldn't have worded it like that. Remember everyone... we will ALL be there someday :)

I just hope you had enough respect for the people who gave you this gift and didn't complain to them about all the old people and how horrible the cruise was.

Now that you are starting to do your research hopefully you won't be so miserable next time.

Also, didn't you take some tours or did you stay on the ship the entire time? That would have helped with your horrible cruise. Things are what you make them to be.
