Happy2cruise Posted May 8, 2016 #26 Share Posted May 8, 2016 We prepaid our gratuities for the Royal for March/April, and there was no mention of it on the account, nor were we charged the daily hotel charge. That was our experience on our Februay cruise on the Emerald;)
travel_nuts Posted May 8, 2016 #27 Share Posted May 8, 2016 You could just tell them. Say something like "We wanted you to know how much we enjoyed you and your service during the cruise. We prepaid gratuities, but wanted to thank you personally. Thank you very much."
socaljo Posted May 8, 2016 #28 Share Posted May 8, 2016 That was our experience on our Februay cruise on the Emerald;) This was our experience too on the Island in April. Love the option. Will be pre-paying again before our January cruise!
moki'smommy Posted May 8, 2016 #29 Share Posted May 8, 2016 Prepaid gratuities and Auto-tip are to different thingsPrepaid you paid before you start your cruise. Auto-tip they add the gratuity to your account every day. Tony Absolutely true...but they accomplish the same thing. It is just a matter of when the money is paid. And the crew doesn't know which you did or if you altered the tips at all until after the cruise. Now--someone made a comment about them having to share cash tips. Really??? jefa Posted May 8, 2016 Author #30 Share Posted May 8, 2016 Yes, I've heard that too, that if people take the auto tip off, and pay separately, then the steward has to put his cash tip into the pool. This is why I wanted to know if prepaying would be told to the steward.
blkspy Posted May 8, 2016 #31 Share Posted May 8, 2016 (edited) We prepaid our gratuities for the Royal for March/April, and there was no mention of it on the account, nor were we charged the daily hotel charge. I had the same experience. I asked about it and was told, since I prepaid...it wont show on my bill at all. That was fine with me. I always slip my Steward an extra $20. Only he and I know he received it. Its done in private. I truly hope he keeps it--its meant for him. Not looking to get into a debate about honesty. Just that I give something extra. pablo222 Posted May 8, 2016 #32 Share Posted May 8, 2016 And the crew doesn't know which you did or if you altered the tips at all until after the cruise. Not true, especially in dining. If someone cancels tips, management is always looking for someone to blame. If there is a waiter who might be to blame, they will be hauled into the maitre d's office to explain what happened. I'm pretty sure that after that, they know who cancelled the tip. In general, waiters etc. know after the end of the last dining service. Stewards seem to have a list from their supervisor during the cruise.

If tips are not cancelled, and waitstaff gets extra cash, are they required to report it?
neverbeenhere Posted May 9, 2016 #34 Share Posted May 9, 2016 Many seem to care what happens to tips. It seems only slightly more important what happens at your local restaurant. Cruise and enjoy. Give with impunity.
jennybenny Posted May 9, 2016 #35 Share Posted May 9, 2016 In December the pre paid gratuities were on our account as credit and the daily gratuities were debited each day. However in April the pre paid gratuities were not visible. I would presume that Princess is in the process of removing that from our statement/folio for all cruises. I don't think the crew finds out who removes gratuities, or who prepays but if you give them extra they know you did :)
