A different VOOM question

Recommended Posts

I've seen lots of threads about VOOM, but please help me understand. It seems like you have to login with a code every time you pick up your device (even though it is only supposed to be every 2 hours). If this is the case, I'm thinking we couldn't keep in touch using iMessage because the texts will not come through if you are not logged in? Trying to decide if having 2 devices is worth it. Thanks!

As long as there is some internet activity from your phone at least once every two hours, it will stay connected. Most people have downloaded a hundred apps that are calling home to mommy periodically, so you will probably be OK. However, if you don't have any apps that are doing background communications, then set up your email to poll every so often.

I noticed that my phone and DS's phone didn't log out / time out automatically if we didn't use them every two hours, probably because the apps we have are in "constant communication" with the internet.

Apps like Facebook, Gmail, Kik, Instagram, etc., are constantly "phoning home" to their servers to see if there are any new messages, which keeps the Voom connection "active" even though you aren't actively picking up the phone and accessing the internet yourself.

For example, when I pick up my phone in the morning after not touching it all night, it's still signed in and I have a bunch of notification icons about new email, Facebook notifications, etc. My phone was still active overnight even though I wasn't.

That's why some people are confused over Internet "use" - you might not be using it but the ship considers you using it since it is using BW.
