Holds placed on bank account

Recommended Posts

You put down cash and when it runs out your card is turned off until you deposit more. How much you put down depends upon how much you've prepaid before hand- our friend put down $152 on her account and her service charges and excursions were paid before the cruise and she received something like a $46 refund 6 weeks after the cruise. We had pre-purchased onboard credit to cover our spending and our final bill was only $126 and change.

you have to wait 6 week for the unused portion of your cash account to be returned???

That's how long our friend had to wait. She didn't want to go to guest services the last day and try to get the refund then, which I understand is at least a possibility. Personally I've never understood the concept "unused portion";).

This depends a great deal on your particular bank, they are under no obligation to put the money back into your account ASAP. I was fortunate when my debit card was used in France (5 months before I was due to fly there) my bank also gave my money back within a day or two, but they certainly had no legal obligation to do that. I am not a big fan of scare tactics either, give people the facts and let them make up their own mind.

Correct

Capital 1 took 6 weeks and since my card was hacked versus lost or stolen and I still had it in my possession a big deal was made if it....

Perhaps it was me who was trying to defraud the bank was the common theme during those 6 weeks and hoops galore were put in front of me. Lol

It was bad

Plus I'm a great long term customer with high balances

the branch manager was an idiot who was afraid of losing his job so he wouldn't go to bat either

A very very smart teller got wind of my situation one day when I was in the branch and came over and sat me done and made a call for me....you guessed it...next day cash back in my account!!!!

The fraud Dept was run by incompetents and that particular branch which is in a very high net worth area has been shut down as well

So yep it not only depends on your bank but your branch and who will go to bat for you with certain banks

I was on the Escape May 21 to May 28th with my 2 daughters. They made each of us put 300 on our cards. We used 2 credit cards and one debit card. The only charges we had were the service charges, $96 for the total trip. The "hold" was released by my credit card by Sunday May 30th, and the hold on my debit card was released and the service charges charged by May 31st.

Also, I have used my debit card a lot and it has been hacked, but I was alerted by Bank of America and the transaction did not go through. My daughter's debit card was hacked and they did charge money on it by it was refunded back to her very quickly.

Not sure why we had to each have a $300 hold, but it all worked out well.

If everyone has their own account secured by a different credit card they would put a $300 hold on each. The four of us were on one card/account and the hold was $300.

My preference on vacation is to take 2 different credit cards and $100 x number of vacation days in cash. I leave my ATM card at home (I only use that card when depositing/withdrawing cash from my checking account...which is rarely since I use direct deposit, on-line payments, checks, etc.). Almost all my purchases (including hotels, cruises, flights, rental cars, groceries, gas, the kids college tuition and my medical bills/prescriptions) are made on my Double Cash Back Citi Card. My back up card is a Chase Saphire Card. Both give me cash rewards back. I cash out these rewards about a month before we vacation. I had $700 from rewards points to take on our vacation last month. I always pay my credit cards in full each month in order for this money to be totally free to me. I have had my credit card information stolen 2x. Both times the bank was right on it and took care of everything. I have two cards just in case one gets compromised and needs to be replaced. DH and I each carry a different card and split 1/2 the cash. The rest gets put in the safe until (if) needed. We usually come home with over half our cash left which gets put towards the payment of the credit card which would have our S&S charges on it (total of $400 for our last cruise for 4 of us, plus I cashed out $100 in winnings from the casino).

I don't agree with the Dave Ramsey no credit card theory. If you are a person who can control your spending and pay your debt off on time, then you are throwing away free cash....all of my vacation spending money comes from this free cash. Too each his own. I have security and free cash when I travel. What more could you ask for?

Warm breezes your post is exactly what we do....from gas to points to paying tuition!!! To taking 2 cards and splitting the cash

We also rarely go to a bank branch anymore unless to deposit cash

Never pay interest and always pay promptly on my cards too

One thing more though.....since we are on kid number 3 going into junior year in college and none of them yet have borrowed one thin dime ....we use interest free credit card deals for tuition

I open a new one each year for usually 18 months of free interest for tuition

I honestly can't believe how many parents refuse to use credit cards to pay tuition especially the interest free cards. Lol. Their loss.

You basically described how we do things too. Only we use our miles to fly for free on Southwest.

We bring around $500 onshore divided between DH and myself. We generally bring almost all of it back on ship.

DH has his credit card account and I have mine they are with different banks. So if one of us gets hacked we are fine. We also bring our corporate card along so we have a 3rd back up of course the accounting would be nightmare but its for worst case scenario.

Its so much easier to just get a credit card and use it for your onboard account. Than risk having your funds on hold for a week or 2 after your cruise. Get a card and ask for a low limit if you don't trust yourself with it.

I do not know how people travel without credit cards (flights, hotels rental cars) it has to be so much harder and more stressful.

So frustrated. My cruse ended over 2 weeks ago. I used profit from the Casino to pay ALL the on-board charges before the last day. Still two weeks later they are holding thousands of dollars on my credit card hostage.

I have called 4 times and keep getting the same run around. 'Who did you talk to last time and what did they tell you?' What the hell does it matter who I talked to last time the problem has still not been resolved. Fix it!

I was on hold for 45 min today waiting for customer service and they told me the exact same thing they told me last week. Holds with Citi bank are only released on Wed and the charges should be released by the EOD on Wed. False! That's what they told me last week and it did not happen.

The irony is had I let the charges hit my credit card and just sent that cash to Citi bank I would not have this issue but I did not want carry 15k in cash off the ship.

This was our first cruise with NCL and we are seriously considering canceling our next cruise and going with a different line if they can't get this sorted out.

During my research I read somewhere that NCL requires you to put down $100 per person per day. There are 6 of us traveling so that can not happen! [emoji33]

They do not do this, and you can check you balance in your room so your card is never turned off. Easy as pie.

What has CitiBank told you? I had holds on my CitiCard account for about 3 weeks after a cruise in March and it was with Carnival. After reading your story, it makes me wonder if the issue is with Citi.

It's a hold on the credit card? If so, what does it matter? It will go away.
