google Ketchikan hiking. There are many trails of varying levels. The US Forest Service has an excellent >60 page hiking guide (http://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/stelprdb5413489.pdf) There are several others that look good, too. I've rented a car in Ketchikan and hiked several of the trails: Ward Lake, Lunch Creek, and stuff like that. There are also trails closer to the port, so you won't need a car. The Forest Service guide describes all of them, including safety concerns and suggestions..
