If by background music you mean the playing of dreadful prerecorded musak (aka "lift music") then I join you in wishing that it's use is banned everywhere, but esp on Cunard ships. There is no need for it at all.

Live performed background music (piano in the Commodore Club, string quartet in the Britannia Restaurant, harpist during tea in the Queens Room etc) is quite another matter of course! Long may that reign :)

I find Cunard ships to be fairly quiet in regards to "music" on the tannoy. A year ago we went to Alaska on a Holland America ship. I know they are not as bad as many other lines, but there was too much piped music for my taste. If it had been inoffensive and quiet (lift/elevator music, if you wish) I could have totally ignored it. But it was a bit too loud rock/pop rubbish which I despise. Mercifully it wasn't on all the outdoor decks. One morning we were sitting in the large observation lounge enjoying the sunrise over the mountains when someone turned on rock music.

I am grateful for Cunard for allowing us mostly peace and quiet.
