Tuesday Day 4 - St. Thomas, Downtown Market, Rum Island Pub, Gladys' Café, Food Republic #1, For the Record show

We decided to do our excursions in Tortola and Nassau this year, and shop in St. Thomas, so we took our time getting off the ship after the guys worked out/went to the spa. Strep Throat patient g11 was starting to feel better but we decided to leave her, her father, & friend g13 on the ship while BFF and my family went ashore to shop for a short while at the downtown market.

StThomasSelfiesmsm_zpsuxrojswe.jpg

Downtown Market in Charlotte Amalie:

We took a strong-patchouli-filled white van to the downtown market for $4 each. We shopped for an hour, got our token souvenirs, shirts, hats, knock-off bags, trinkets, and headed back to the boat via open air shuttle for $4 pp. The shuttles are easy to find and request; the drivers ask you as you get out onto the pier from the boat (or at the market) if you need a ride to tour the island or to go downtown or to the boat. My husband couldn't believe it was so easy, I know he had a different idea last year of this experience when I told him when I got home so it was good for him to experience it firsthand.

We took the shopping finds back to the boat and checked on the sick kiddo. She was feeling a lot better and requested to go shopping and get something to eat. My kiddo b8 wanted to go to Splash Academy to eat lunch on board with his friends so I left hubby and kiddo onboard and ventured out with BFF's family back to downtown St. Thomas for trip #2 at $4 pp.

Husband Daycare (a.k.a. Rum Island Pub):

Back to St. Thomas a second time, we requested to be dropped off at Drakes Passage, where you'll find a great outdoor place to get a quencher or 3, at Rum Island Pub. It's island time here, they are super laid back, will make up any drink you can think of, overlooks the bay and cruise ships, and generally is just a great place to chill in between shopping or even just for a destination on its own (while the wifey shops!). BFF & I visited last year on the Getaway trip and vowed to bring the husbands here.

StThomasHusbandDayCare_zpsz2qitoqw.jpg

We ordered virgin drinks for the girls and loaded drinks for the adults, then spied the new adjacent Rum Island Pub gift shop where we had a nice chat with the RIP owner who was excited to have local artists and curators showcase their locally-made hand-painted shirts, paintings, jewelry, spices, sauces, etc in her shop. She gave me my choice of RIP bumper sticker after I mentioned I gave their pub a wonderful Trip Advisor review on our last visit. Another fun stop here, I highly recommend it, across the alley from RIP.

Gladys' Café:

As recommended by the fine folks at Rum Island Pub when inquiring about good conch fritters nearby, we stopped at Gladys' Café for a quick bite, a couple of passages (alleys) over. We had a cheeseburger, an order of conch fritters, chips, guac & salsa, and an order of wings. The conch in the fritters was very crispy, much like crunching on raw rice in the middle of your hush puppy. So, I continue my search for the best conch fritters since I first tried them on a rum tour in Nassau last year. BFF's family thought the wings and burger were awesome. The chips were soft and puffy, delicious with the yummy salsa and guac. The homemade sauces on the table were also very good. Most importantly, our strep patient was looking and feeling much better than the day before, and finally eating. After lunch we mosied around in a few shops before heading back to the boat.

Food Republic - FINALLY!! - Visit #1:

I mentioned before that I've seen my share of reviews about the Escape and one thing remains constant in the reviews ... the admiration for Food Republic. Jeeeez, I couldn't wait!! We got back on the boat from our second St. Thomas visit that day and decided to give Food Republic a try before our For the Record show. After taking b8 to the buffet for a bite, I dropped him off to Dad and headed out to FR with BFF and her husband. The food was delicious and the process for self-ordering was awesome! The service was poor :(( Really, it was a dichotomy that we tried to piece apart and analyze because it just didn't make sense. Here is this wonderful waitress explaining how to self-order your own food which will be delivered as soon as it comes up. Fine, that seems reasonable. Then she keeps wandering around and every once in a while we'd get one of the 4 dishes we ordered, until our second round of dishes start to arrive before the first order has all arrived, yet we see the sashimi from the first order still sitting on the corner of the sushi bar for the last 15 minutes, no one taking it to a table. Is it ours? Mouths drooling, please let that be ours.. She comes by again and says, most importantly, please let her know if something is missing. Wait, what? She said to let the food come out when it's ready, she will bring it out, now she says if you are missing anything let her know?! We all come out of our euphoric fog and clamor, Yes! we are missing the Hamachi sashimi (my personal favorite fish) from round 1! Yes, she says, I see it. That dish sitting there for now 20 minutes was our beloved sashimi we wanted with the food and sake from round 1.. :( The food was good, we had pork belly potstickers (no excitement there), buffalo blue-cheese fried shrimp (different, kept debating whether I liked the food or the creativity more - friends did not like it), Hamachi sashimi (two very small slivers, delicious, but too small an order compared to other dishes for the price), lamb chops (very good), and Dates with Chorizo (which we ordered in round 1 and again in round 2 and ended up my favorite dish of our two visits). We decided this might just be an off-time on the service and decided to try it another day.

For the Record show:

Feeling like I'd been racing from place to place, I decided that I wanted some of my own time and bowed out of the planned For the Record show, for which we had reservations. My hubby felt the same, and kiddo begged to go back to Splash Academy. So BFF's family headed to the show on their own. They loved it, or should I say 3 of the 4 of them loved it, because I ran into their Daddy in the casino when he was supposed to be at the show. He came out to grab a smoke, and the machine he put a $20 into wouldn't let him leave. He won a few hundred and figured his wife would approve of his decision to skip the show; they had a ship doctor's bill to pay, by golly! I jest, yes they are planning to submit the bill to their insurance company. Back to the show, I was a little hesitant to let my b8 see it, 'adult themes', so got the lowdown from BFF and her older kids. They all loved it. She said it was Very adult for the younger set, but topics that they had been discussing in their house for the tweens were prevalent. She thought it would have been too much, too adult, for b8 but fine for g11 & g13. Good to know.

Netchick - this is fabulous! We are sailing Escape in December - same route. We will be taking our two grandchildren b9 and g11. Looking forward to more of your review.

Question - if you have the UBP does that include the liquor in the fridge?

Thanks, Choochala, you are all going to have a great time! That's a great question, & important to know. The UBP does Not include liquor in the fridge, hubby assumed it did so we confirmed with our steward that is it not included.

Wednesday Day 5 - Tortola, Room Service, Jost Van Dyke, Where to Watch the Game, Water Slides, Moderno, Casino

Room Service:

We ordered room service a few times (early excursions, minimal time between events, late-night). For Tortola it was a good choice given our early 7AM in the Theater meet-up time. BFF added an extra note to the breakfast order to have it delivered at 6:00 AM, before the first 6:30 delivery time listed, with an extra 'Pleeeease :)', which was accommodated exactly as requested, order arriving exactly at 6:00 AM. The order-taking, the service, and the food was on par each time.

The Perfect Beach Day - Jost Van Dyke:

Our Tortola excursion to Jost Van Dyke was the first excursion we booked this trip, for fear it would sell out (it did). Last year on the Getaway we opted for a family beach day at Tortola and tried Jost Van Dyke, the purported place where the Painkiller was invented. It was the highlight of the entire trip, we had an absolute blast with 3 generations of family.

JostBeach1_zpswp6vej1e.jpg

The ship's excursion takes you to White Bay Beach which is a small cove, the water a beautiful turquoise, the sand soft and white, the water shallow, with drink/food shacks and hammocks & beach chairs up and down the beach. This year's family excursion to Jost ended an hour earlier than last year and I missed the extra time, but definitely had fun. We got a few drinks at Soggy Dollar Bar and like last year ordered food from Gertrude's.

JostBeach2_zpsyqjqsddg.jpg

What a fun, relaxing beach day. We had no pain when we left the pristine island. On the way back to the ship on the Rebel Yell catamaran, much to my dismay, I was forced to drink more rum libations & found myself daydreaming about what sacrifices I might have to make to live in a tropical paradise. Record-screech - we've had this internal conversation before. Many, many times before.

Leaving White Bay Beach, Jost van Dyke

Game Viewing! Waves Bar Deck 17:

Back onboard the ship we hiked it up to the Waves Bar on Deck 17 for a quick sync on the rest of the day's activities. A little about the Waves Bar. This is one of the ship's open smoking areas. BFF's hubby went here often. It was a great place to watch games in the afternoon on the 2 megatron-like outdoor screens. Even in the rain, games were broadcast here. The bar closes before 11PM, though games continue on the screens afterwards. This was also the best place to see the adult pool activities, looking directly at the adult pool stage, pool, and hot tubs. The back of the Waves bar overlooks the kid's pool & splash area.

Water Slides:

There are several water slides on the Escape, all are a ton of fun. I recommend trying at least one slide during your cruise! The scariest water slide of all is the Aqua Racer. It allows up to two racers in individual tubes to race each other to the bottom. To be clear, this is terrifying, and I was suckered onto it last year by my sadistic sister on the Getaway. This year after talking to an 85 yo Grandpa grinning ear-to-ear on my way up to my first slide, he explained he was going on the aqua racer over and over. I really had no excuses. They did not do a countdown on the Racer slide this year, and in retrospect I think that is what made it scariest. We tried all of the slides, one of which is used with an inner tube. I'm pretty sure I put 2 years back on my life from all of the fun & laughing that day. Minus 2 years for the UBP & the Painkillers on Jost and I should be back to even. :P

slides_zpslfc7mndu.jpg

Moderno:

We took the kids to the buffet, then to Splash Academy, and got ready for an adults Moderno dinner. Moderno is a Brazilian Steakhouse, with a very large salad bar which is really a bit of appetizer, soup, salad, pre-dinner munchie station all in one. It is vast, with many food options. After the salad bar, the meat started arriving, which was excellent! But the portions were sooo big. A delicious bacon-wrapped chicken thigh found it's way to my plate, followed by a Filet, then a Lamb Chop. I couldn't take anymore because the meat portions were huge. 1 oz. to 2 oz. portions would have been perfect. Delicious food....

Casino:

I am not sure why, but I smelled the smoke from the casino on decks 6, 7, 8 more on this trip than on the Getaway which seems strange because the layout is so similar, if not identical. But that didn't keep me away from trying my hand at lady luck. It was definitely a flirting game with her through the week. Sometimes up, then down, you know how this story goes. Although, she liked our gents pretty well, the guys won consistently at the Quick Hit and Wheel of Fortune games. The casino had all of the typical table games too.

Thursday Day 6 - Last 'At Sea' Day, Ropes Course, Arcade, Splashtacular Circus Show, Cats Pajamas Dinner Show, Glow Party, Towel Animals

Ropes Course:

We decided to hit the ropes course before lunch assuming it would be just like the Getaway, but we were in for a shocker!! The ropes course seemed innocuous enough at first but was bigger, better, and scarier than the Getaway. You first start out on one side of the ship in your harness. Just when you finish the maze on that side of the ship, you approach the zipline, which shoots you across the boat above the bocce ball court to the other side of the ship for more fun. I was leading our group and walked into a staff member on the other side of the course and thought oh he must be performing maintenance up here. Ha, ha. He grinned and I suddenly realized through him was the only way to go. Straight out past the ship over the ocean on the scariest zip line of all!!!! The running start off the zip line ramp is the freakin' scariest thing to do. Then landing on the opposite ramp while still moving was a bit of a feat as well. I had to pause and take a moment to recover and then cheer on my group. It was definitely a fun time! If you are curious about the time between waiting in line (about 20 of us in line) and the course itself, we were done in about 45-minutes. Oh, another point, they were strict about the attire, requiring short-or-long sleeved shirts, no tanks, closed toe shoes and no open-handed cell phones. A staff member told me someone yelled down to him and he looked up only to be hit in the face with a falling cell phone. Ouch.

RopesCourse_zpsdmblcvb9.jpg

Video Arcade:

BFF's girls were allowed a certain dollar amount each day to spend in the video arcade since they were out and about the ship by themselves. BFF received a phone call asking if she was aware of how much was being charged in the arcade. She'd been keeping an eye on the bill and the girls stayed within their limit so all was fine but it was nice that the ship called to double-check. There were some fun, new games in the arcade, as well as skee ball, a competition hoops game, a new take on air hockey.... but no Galaga....What!?

Splashtacular Circus Show:

Kiddo had been practicing the devil sticks circus act (3 long sticks) and was excited to show off his skills in the Big Top Circus Event in the theater. All acts are cute, but the real tear-jerker are the dang cutest, little 'tigers' (guess around 3 and 4 yo) that jump through a 'flame hoop' and growl into a microphone at the end, one by one. Tears every time, Mom's you know what I mean! At the end of the show they have the kids mix up the hand-signs and then rearrange them, which gave the parents one last chuckle at this first spelling attempt.

AsstacularLOL_zpszsm2lqnb.jpg

Cats Pajamas Acapella Dinner Show:

Early in the cruise BFF ran into a lady talking about how we MUST go see the Cats Pajamas acapella dinner show, which was free of charge. We hadn't heard of it but decided to add it to our week of activities and booked it for the last sea day for our party of 7 and cancelled the La Cucina dinner. Upon arriving, we were seated in the third row at two adjoining tables. The service, food, and show were outstanding. The appetizer was a trio of small bites, dinner was the most delicious baked chicken I tasted on the trip, and the dessert an interesting meringue with berries which b8 loved. The 5 acapella singers were fantastic, mixing up new and old tunes among different genres in the show. They encouraged dancing and singing and adults and kids all had a great time. I don't know how long the Cats Pajamas will be on the Escape but I highly recommend seeing this show if you get a chance.

Cats2_zpsef7ga2k0.jpg

Glow Party:

We knew we were going to make at least one late-night party this trip - the Glow Party! This is a family-friendly dance party where guests are encouraged to wear white or items that glow. It's held outdoors at Spice H20. Splash Academy has their own Glow Party which my kiddo wanted to go to with his cool, new friends but the girls went to the outdoor Glow Party with us. We staked out our seats early and danced the night away. The servers were very attentive during the party.

Towel Animals:

My b8 was always excited to come home to the towel animal our steward would leave for us. OK, so was I :)

This review is fabulous!!! :) You have me thinking we should do Jost Van Dyke next summer on our Escape cruise. Silly question, but do they make you swim to shore from the catamaran? My oldest will be 14, our youngest 10. But she is much more cautious than the 14year old...lol. I am glad to hear they opened up the balcony dividers for you and BFF's cabin. I have read yes and no on this :) My Mom and Dad are cruising next to us , so this excites me!! Thank you for taking the time to write such a great review! Oh, and I have added Gladys' restaurant there on St. Thomas to my list too!!

Jost Van Dyke is on my list! Thanks for posting the pictures and video clip from there. Did you go through ship excursion? I'm wondering what time you got back to port. We'd like to have time for a little shopping afterwards.

You've made my day. I'm so happy the review was beneficial to you. That's a great question about the catamaran. The ladder opens from the hull with a staff member assisting guests down into knee-high water. There is little-to-no wake so it's pretty easy to get to the sand beach. Our balcony divider remained open until we docked back in Miami. I read somewhere that it had to be shut prior, but that wasn't our experience.

Friday Day 7 - Nassau, Straw Market, Atlantis Deep Water Dolphin Swim, Sugarcane Mojito Bar, Food Republic #2

Straw Market:

Most of us headed off the ship as soon as it docked at Noon and went to the Straw Market for souvenirs. My hubby wanted to spend the day on the boat in the spa. We only needed about an hour to pick up what we needed. We sent BFFs hubby back to the ship with our souvenirs and 5 of us hailed a taxi bus to Atlantis, at $4 pp.

Deep Water Dolphin Swim at Atlantis:

On BFF's bucket list was a dolphin swim, and this seemed to be the right year to do it. We looked into Blue Lagoon in Nassau about five months out from the cruise and decided to wait to see if their coupons would be valid closer to the cruise (buy one, get one). So we sat on it for a couple of months, compared costs of the ship's dolphin excursions, and figured we'd book directly with Blue Lagoon and save quite a bit of money. A month before the trip we went to book directly with Blue Lagoon and they had closed all direct bookings and were forcing people to go through the cruise ship's excursion. In our back pocket was the Atlantis Resort Dolphin Swim so we looked closer into that. There was a shallow water and a deep water swim. We opted to book directly with Atlantis for the deep water dolphin swim which gave the kids more time with the dolphins including hugs, kisses, and a foot-push by the dolphins. The cynic in me says you pay more to have a longer time for the photographer so they get more shots of you just so you can pay for more pics at the end. And that's about what happened, though Yes it was THE highlight excursion for the kids, and I have to admit it was pretty cool.

dolphinjump_zpsmhjto4zc.jpg

Here's a little more info about the Dolphin swim; We arrived at the Atlantis resort about an hour and a half early, knowing we could hang out on a beach prior to our dolphin swim. From start to finish, it was all very organized and a first class experience. We showed our emailed receipts to a check-in kiosk and were directed inside to a long registration desk. We showed our receipts again and were registered, got wristbands, and were told to head out to the beach and relax until our assigned time near Building C. A short walk later we dropped our bags off at some beach loungers and took a moment to soak it all in.

The lagoon was large and beautiful, and there were small pods of people all along the lagoon grouped together enjoying their time with the dolphins, some people behind us doing an orientation, and dolphins and trainers everywhere. This wasn't a one-dolphin show, there were tons of dolphins jumping, swimming, training, it was a sight to behold. We decided to get some drinks and snacks and left the kids to watch the dolphins and headed back up to the registration office where we found a full snack bar complete with sandwiches, hot dogs, wraps, salads, and beverages. Back at the beach we snacked and watched the dolphins until it was time to head to Bldg C.

We all got suited into shorty wet suits, stored our belongings in free lockers, and headed into the orientation room. We waited for a trainer to come in but the cute animated dolphin on the big screen TV did the orientation! He directed us to go around the room and explain where we were from, then he had comments for all of us based on where we said we were from! It was really cute. He went over where not to touch a dolphin and what to expect when we get in the water. At the end of the orientation, a trainer came in and tested the group again on where not to touch a dolphin and we headed out to our respective sites in the lagoon, no more than 7 or 8 people in a group. Our group had 7 people, including BFF & I, the 3 kids b8, g11, g13, and another Mom & g9 who worked for Atlantis in FL, there on vacation. We had so much fun, all the while a photographer snapped photos.

DolphinLagoon_zpsael162up.jpg

We fed the dolphin, petted it as it swam through us for 10 minutes, then each got a chance to dance with him, kiss him, hug him, for about 15 minutes, and then we all took turns on a boogie board at one end of the lagoon while the dolphin swam up behind our foot and pushed us at a rapid speed to the other side of the lagoon (see videos). Everything was photographed. We completed our time with the dolphins, picked up a towel, changed, and got our belongings. We headed out through the gift shop where you could view photos. 45 minutes later in line, BFF went to one photo staff person and I another. The cheapest package was $60 and barely included anything. I spied a $160 USB jump drive package with an 8x10 plus frame and all of the photos from our party and asked if we could include BFF's family in our photo set since we all came to Atlantis together. He was happy to oblige, throwing in a free 8x10 for her and another free frame and all of the 81 photos for our group. We were out of there another 15 minutes later, walking back up to hotel valet who hailed us a taxi van back to the ship. Easy peasy, and a boat of fun! :)

DolphinPostcard_zpshieh2bxx.jpg

Sugarcane Mojito Bar:

I have to say that I did not realize how much we enjoyed the Sugarcane Mojito bar on the Getaway until we couldn't find its replica on the Escape. Sure we found Sugarcane, adjacent to Bayamo, but there was a bar only. No inside lounge area and no outside waterfront bar & lounge area like on the Getaway. Instead, outside of Sugarcane is the 5 o'clock Somewhere bar and outdoor Bayamo seating. I did get my favorite jalapeño mojito which was outstanding.

Food Republic - Visit #2:

We wanted to give Food Republic another try so decided to get some food with the kids after our Atlantis excursion. On the menu this time was Edamame, California roll, Kimchee fried rice, Pad Thai, Pub Sliders, and Brussel Sprouts. While the food was (again) good, with the brussel sprouts being the standout dish this time, unfortunately we had the exact same service problem as our first visit. Menu items sat over at the food counter and not delivered until the waitress asked if we were missing anything, after being absent most of the meal. There's something off in their process about how the dishes kept being missed. Maybe we were hyper-aware having been in the restaurant industry, knowing how to keep on top of tables and food orders, but 0 for 2 on service was disappointing. But the food, go there for that! :D

Up next, one last small update for Day 8 - Disembark (tears...)

Saturday Day 8 - Miami, Breakfast, Jiffy Jeff, Disembark, Video

Breakfast:

BFF's family had a 6 PM flight out of FLL while we had a 3 PM flight out of FLL, so we were in no hurry to get off the boat. We hung around eating a long breakfast at the buffet, chatting with others about our experiences, and having already connected with Jiffy Jeff at 7:15 AM to confirm the transfer at 10:30AM.

We visited with a couple of older gals at the buffet, trading notes. I was surprised to hear they thought that Carnival was much better than the Escape, that the Escape was boring (gasp!). They tried all of the restaurants, giving them sub-par ratings and felt the ship lacked activities to keep them busy. For us, we couldn't fit everything we wanted to do on the ship into 7 days. But we all come from different places, have different likes, so there's a cruise out there for each of us.

Disembark:

We disembarked the boat around 9:45 AM, found porters to help us with the extensive luggage entourage, breezed right through customs with barely a blink and no wait. Jiffy Jeff picked us up where expected.

Video:

Well, that my friends, is our fantastic, marvelous, to be experienced again, family trip on the NCL Escape.

We loved our trip, had so much fun each day. I like the Caribbean destinations Escape goes to now, but I think I like the Getaway ship better.

I created a video of the locations we went to, activities/places on the boat, with additional photos and videos not in the review (and some that were).

Thanks for hanging on throughout my post, allowing me a safe platform to try my hand at my first cruise review & video, and encouragement along the way. :)

Great review, thank you! As you mentioned, everyone has a different perspective on the ship depending on their own wants and needs, so I'm so glad that people take the time to write detailed reviews!

Question - what did the two girls think of the water park and kid's activities? Our daughter will be 10.5 when we are on Escape and I am curious if she'll still want to spend a ton of time on the slides and in the kid's water area.

Thank you for your note. The girls loved the slides and the pool, they were there often. They also loved the mini-golf and ropes course. They went to the Kid's Aqua Park once. Their ages put them into different Splash Academy / Entourage programs so they only tried that once as well.
