brda Posted October 23, 2005 #1 Share Posted October 23, 2005 Does anyone know if Celebrity will be able to convert U.S. travelers checks into pesos on board the Mercury as they do the Euro on European sailings. Also, are the banks in San Diego a good place to change our currency into pesos. If they both provide this service, which do you think would give a better exchange rate? I prefer not to use ATMs in Mexico. Thanks for your help.
excitedofharpenden Posted October 23, 2005 #2 Share Posted October 23, 2005 Hi brda. I am leaving on Saturday for our Mexican Riviera cruise on Mercury and don't plan on taking any pesos with me. Unlike Europe, they readily accept US Dollars as currency in shops etc there. Phil

jukeboxy Posted October 23, 2005 #4 Share Posted October 23, 2005 You can cash your TC's at the bank on the Mercury or you can do it in the casino. As far as using cash in Mexico they love to get U.S. dollars but some places don't have dollars for change. Get a good spread of 5s', 10's and 1's to carry with you and pay as close to prices as possible. Before you pay ask, "do you have dollars for change?" If you do get Pesos in change try to spend it at your next purchase. They will take a mix of Pesos and Dollars as long as your spending money. The rule of thumb theses days is 10 to 1 for the exchange rate but check on the ship with the shopping lady. They run the shopping lady's talk on the TV in your cabin so you can always watch that for last minute information

I asked the bank on the ship if they had pesos and they told me no, but I could get some at the bar that was near the walkway from the ship. MAXII Posted October 24, 2005 #6 Share Posted October 24, 2005 Hi there: just returned from M. Riviera aboard the Summit - US dollars are taken in all ports. Agree with other posts, take small bills so as not to get stuck with pesos when you receive change. ps. 1US dollar buys 60 minutes internet time in the internet cafe opposite the Sheraton hotel in Puerto Vallarta.
