Downline ... How does this work

Recommended Posts

Friends of mine are going on their first cruise on allure of the seas - eastern Caribbean in early December. They are jumping ship in St Maarten to then cruise around the Caribbean on a tall ship with star clippers.

How does the downline procedure work?

Can they leave it until say 3 pm to get their luggage off and disembark or do they have to disembark as soon as they arrive in St Maarten ??

Any tips would be appreciated.

Generally, they can leave at any port they wish except Labadee or obviously Coco Cay. They will need to notify guest service the night prior to arrival at that port. Generally this then requires the guest(s) to meet in the dining room the following morning to meet with customs agents of that country. They can then usually depart the ship at their leisure.

For the record, it's not quite as easy the other way around. Meeting the ship after it leaves Fort Lauderdale (or other US port) requires a medical or travel necessity and they have the right to deny boarding. It has to do with the fact these cruises are "closed loop," so those returning to the US at the end have an easier time through customs than those at the airport or other port of entry.

They should ask RC and get the answer in writing. This is not something you want to mess up.

They have approval from RCI and arrangements are made. St Maarten is the last port before the ship returns to Fort Lauderdale.

GS should already know since they requested early disembarkation. One would go to GS to settle the onboard bill.

An e-mail must be sent to: AirSeaGFO@RCCL.com with all the details at least one week before the cruise. Once that is granted then one can make plans for an early departure.
