1 yo on Celebrity - am I kidding myself?

After 9 cruises on Celebrity, I speak well for other cruisers. I have never seen juvenile behavior on the part of adults. Also, since we do a lot of 14 day cruises, I see very few children on cruises.

When my Granddaughter was about 3, the meals we had with her were basically a disaster. There is a fine line between a small child that cries due to sitting in a highchair for 1 1/2 hours and one that destroys the meal for anyone within that end of the restaurant. Unfortunately, my Granddaughter was in the latter category.

Kudos to you for this honest admission.

Typically people who post on cruise boards complain about other people's children or grandchildren and brag that their own children or grandchildren are perfectly behaved angels. ;)

We have cruised annually with no kids, then with our kids as infants, then as toddlers, then as small children, bigger kids and now, they are teens! As someone else mentioned, you know your child the best and how well they will travel and behave around others. In general, you will enjoy your cruise more as your kids get older and become "lower maintenance". We definitely enjoyed the cruise less when the kids were infants because of their limitations with sleep, eating and going on excursions, however that's not to say you won't or can't have fun--but just like things at home now, things are just so much harder with a baby! Good luck! :)

On two cruises where we dined in Luminae, there were children both times. One was a boy of about 4 who was absolutely terrible. I felt very bad for the staff as the parents demanded they do anything the child wanted. He ran around tables, threw food on the floor and basically refused to sit. The parents were the problem as they ignored the kid and did nothing to stop his behavior.

That's horrible. I would have been having a conversation with the Luminae host, and taken it up the chain if nothing were done.

I thought Luminae would have an age limit.

I my opinion children do not belong in an exclusive Suite venue.

The Celebrity FAQ is clear on this: (http://www.creative.rccl.com/Sales/Celebrity/General_Info/Flyers/14037410_CEL_Suites_FAQs.pdf)

Are all children traveling in a suite permitted to dine in the Suite Class exclusive restaurant?

Yes, children are welcome. Suite Class guests are asked to ensure appropriate decorum and behavior of children to preserve the ambiance of

Luminae.

As a parent, I hope you did complain. That is not okay in any way. Well behaved kids or adults should be welcome, but throwing food, running should not be tolerated anywhere. This is why parents who are respectful get a bad name. Behavior like that doesn't even belong in a backyard BBQ.

And per the last sentence of that FAQ, if parents are not controlling their kids in Luminae, they should all be asked to leave.

(Should be true of any dining venue, actually; just good manners and civility.)

That made me smile.

Anyway, it is the internet so I'd just add that not only is my toddler impeccably well behaved when dining in Luminae, he also enjoys discussing his wine pairings with the sommelier. :D

And his diaper changing procedure i'll bet.

Back to the OP's question ---- I'm not sure if you are kidding yourself, but cruising with a 1 one year old doesn't sound like much fun to me, unless you are traveling with family and they can help you out. Most of the fun things I associate with cruising won't be available to you. Babies who are not toilet trained are not allowed in the pools, even with swim diapers. You won't be able to lounge by the pool and relax, have a leisurely and elegant meal, go to the casino or evening shows, enjoy the martini bar and other lounges with evening entertainment, and so on. Of course, that could change if you use the babysitting service, and you always have the option of spelling each other. But in general, your time will be spent taking care of the baby, and there aren't a lot of places where you can just let him run around. Plus, other cruisers will not be happy if he cries at night or early AM, is restless in the DR, or disrupts a show. Anyway, I'm certainly not one of those cruisers who doesn't want to see kids on a ship, but I doubt I would attempt to cruise with a toddler.

Well, we are taking a 1yr old and a 3.5 yr old in August on the Millennium, also in a Sky Suite. So, we'll let you know how it goes :)

Have a great time. We started cruising with our children when they were two and three, fifteen years ago. They are D+ and Elite on their own rights now. We cruise in suites most of the time and on our last cruise two weeks ago we enjoyed Luminae most nights. My only advice to you and the OP is to ask them to speed up the diner. Dining in Luminae takes a looooong time!! :D:D

BTW, There were plenty of families in Luminae during our cruise and never saw anyone misbehaving. :)

I've cruised Celebrity a couple of times (childless) but now considering a family cruise with my 1 yo. Am I kidding myself with this or do you think it's feasible? Just trying to work through the logistics of it in my head e.g pram in elevator, getting off and on the ship. Would Luminae provide a highchair or would this be frowned upon?

I don't like the RCCL mega family ships so would either cruise Celebrity or not at all.

It's pretty easy, we have done infant, 1yo, toddler, and on up through 12 (our daughters current age) Just have some realistic expectations on what you're going to do. Our daughter was generally very good with things through the years, with just a couple of small exceptions. In those cases we did what parents should do, one of us took her out so she wouldn't disturb anyone. We brought an umbrella stroller, much easier for walking around the ship and in ports. She wanted to walk a lot at 1, so we spent a good amount of time walking the stairs *grin* If there is babysitting service, use it from time to time. Our daughter loved the shows, so we always took her. We would sit towards the back so we could escape if we needed to, but that was never a problem. Most of the crew will treat her like gold (particularly those with kids back home themselves).

If your plan is for the two of you to be out dancing in the disco until 2-3am, well you'll have to rethink it. For most things, especially if looking to relax, you'll have a great time. And you get to do it with the enjoyment of family time together (without having to do chores!)

You've never been on a cruise where an adult is very loud, particularly after having a "few too many", acting obnoxious or making off-color jokes and such? I think I can speak for other cruisers who HAVE seen that type of juvenile behavior from adults.

2-3 is probably the toughest age. At 1 they mainly just want to explore, but don't tend to act out as much. In all cases though, it's up to the parent to remove the child from the scene if they're going to act out. That's one of the things of bringing a child onboard. As a parent, I dislike people ignoring a badly behaving child just as much as those without kids.

We have lived in Orlando area for 25 years and observed Moms, Dads and toddlers on the airplanes and the parks.

A couple of questions for you to ponder. Are you going on vacation for yourself and bringing baby along because you feel guilty if you leave baby home? you will remember the vacation, good or bad, but certainly the baby will not remember it. Will you feel you are on vacation? Would you feel just as gratified if your baby enjoys a local attraction? Most likely the baby will enjoy anything he/she encounters

We've seen so much friction among the parents at various venues, it is amazing the couple are still smiling as they load on the planes back home.

Thea air borne, food borne, surface borne illnesses seem to be increasing on these cruise ships. Will you tolerate minimal pediatric care in the event your baby gets sick.

Just some thoughts from a pa , grandpa and part of the crowd at the attraction

We have been cruising with our two kids since my youngest was six months old , we had a great time , but absolutely no rest for us .

When he hit three things changed as they can go into the kids clubs , which he loved and my daughter who is older also adores. We had a few mornings / afternoons " child free " just to lounge in the adult only area and read a book for once , a few hours of heaven .

Dinner times were fine as they fed them first and we popped them back to the kids club ( sometimes ) just for an hour until we had finished our dinner . It works , but not very restful till three !!!

Do it , we cruised before kids , and it's a totally different experience but great fun !!! Excursions are hilarious

No problems with one year old. Took one year old twins and they were great. We did take 2 single strollers as opposed to a twin stroller it's easier in the halls and elivator. As long as your stroller is smaller than an electric wheelchair and I don't know a stroller that isn't you will fit anywhere. Have fun and enjoy yourself.
