The Horizon cruise ship ran aground today in Stavanger, Norway. The Stavanager Aftonblad newspaper reports that the cruise ship became stuck after sailing into the sandbanks near the Norwegian port. Tugs were sent to the scene and and pushed the ship safely into the dock.

The Horizon is owned by Croisieres de France, a subsidiary of Royal Caribbean.

The 46,800 GT vessel was departing the port at 2 p.m. when the ex-Celebrity Cruises ship drifted into a sandbank. Local news reports that tugs were sent to assist the ship, maneuvering it back to the dock, where dive teams later searched for any damage caused by the incident. No injuries have been reported.

 

Horizon will spend the night in port, however it is not yet known how long the ship will remain docked in Stavanger. The incident has resulted in Tuesday’s scheduled call in Geiranger to be cancelled.

 

The ship, which is joint-operated by Croisieres de France and Pullmantur, departed Calais on July 23 on a 7-night ‘Midnight Sun’ cruise, with Stavanger being the first port of call. The ship was due to sail to Geiranger, Flam and Bergen, before returning to Calais, however it is not known how the itinerary will be affected by the grounding.
