Dream problems?!?

I just got the following message. Anyone know more about what's going on with the ship?

Dear Carnival Dream Guests,

We know you must be very excited about your cruise tomorrow. So we want to provide you some important information.

Carnival Dream is currently experiencing a technical issue, which is only affecting her maximum cruising speed. Rest assured all other safety systems and hotel services are operating normally.

I'm sorry to say as a result, our arrival tomorrow will be delayed. We expect to be alongside at approximately 9:00 AM.

For your comfort and convenience, we ask that you please add two and half hours to your selected check-in window. At this time, we do not foresee this delay will have any impact on our itinerary plans.

This has been going on all year, it won't be fixed until they go in for their scheduled maintenance in Jan. Sometimes it effects when they get into ports and people lose a lot of port times, other times it doesn't. It really depends on the weather. If anything slows them down they can't speed up to make up time because they aren't running at full power. It's nothing that effects the operations of the ship it just keeps them from kicking it into high gear and getting to ports as fast as they use to.

There's no way to know if it will effect your itinerary or not until you are out at sea and they see what conditions are like each day. You may be right on time all through your cruise or you may have your time cut short with late arrivals and early departures. They refuse to alter their ports and just make everyone on board deal with it.

I've decided to just cancel my Dec cruise instead of messing with it. I was already on the fence on whether I was going to go or not and honestly with all their issues I just don't feel like dealing with them. I'll take the minimal loss of my sale deposit and book on a different ship.

Great-I don't want to cancel my December cruise :(

Has anyone gotten any kind or reimbursement for missing ports, or is it just an hour or so shorter. We are usually only on land maybe 3 hours to look around. I just read this and am going on a cruise Aug 28, would have booked the breeze if I knew, but it's too late to change the entire family'so flights and plans since we have multiple rooms for people from all over the country.

no refund. If I remember correctly we left GC two hours early and arrived one hour later and left an hour early at Cozumel.

We had enough time at the beach at GC and decided to cancel our A1 beach day at Coz as not enough time there to justify it.

Oh, that won't bother me. Thanks

Is this happening every week? We sail on the Dream next weekend and I'm wondering what to expect. We will be shuttled from hotel to port and not sure how that works once we have to be out of our room but possibly 2 hours later at port for check in.

We decided we didnt have enough beach time in Cozumel we were going to go to Mr Sanchos.

Figured by the time the ship docks and we get off and take taxi to beach we would have maybe 3 1/2 hours and it wasnt worth it for about $ 150 beach day.

So we just wandered about the port. Kind of a disappointment but we made the best of it.

For those worried about their upcoming cruises' date=' no, this is not an every week issue. I was on the Dream in December, March, and June. No propulsion issues.[/quote']

Depends upon itinerary but this has been a problem for months now.

Our itinerary was Jamaica, GC and Cozumel and ship couldnt go fast enough to keep it with original port times.

I'm definitely interested in hearing some facts on this issue. Over the last 6 months or so it seems there have been multiple reports of propulsion issues and multiple reports that there are no issues. :)

If you have anything to add, please do.

Ask the people who say no propulsion problem what their itinerary was. Shorter ones seem to be no problem.

While I have no facts, based on the e-mails others have reported, I suspect that one of the propulsion motors has a winding that has failed, or nearly failed, so that the one propeller cannot produce full power and the ship cannot make full speed, so itineraries with longer passages that require higher transit speeds would be affected, while those with shorter passages are not.

I base this on the statements reported from Carnival about problems reaching full speed, and other statements from those who have cruised saying they were told the problem wouldn't be fixed until drydock. The propulsion motors have two sets of windings, each powered from a different set of generators, so that if one winding fails, the motor can produce half power. Replacing these windings requires removal of the propulsion motor, which requires cutting a large hole in the side of the ship, hence no repair until drydock.

In layman's terms, if you don't mind a little extra time at sea, this will be no big deal. I'm in that camp because it likely means the ship's casino and shops will likely be open longer. However if every minute in port is important to you, you'd likely find this situation offensive since it will cut into your port time.

And for anyone who needs to catch a flight after the cruise, this could be a huge problem since changing flights can be very expensive and inconvenient.

It really depends on your personal situation.

She seems to be getting back home without too much trouble just leaving Cozumel early to do so. Since that is our favorite port was not thrilled about it but stuff does happen and just have to make the best of it.

So Dream seems to basically do three different 7 day itineraries:

1. Belize, Roatan, Cozumel

2. Jamaica, Grand Cayman, Cozumel

3. Key West, Freeport, Nassau

Not sure which of those is the most nautical miles and/or is the being delayed more than others.

Anyone?
