NCL Escape O'Sheehan's Take Out Food

Hi Everyone!

Just returned from the Escape and wanted to let you know of a change that I had not read about before traveling. O'Sheehan's no longer allows "take out" food from the restaurant at anytime. We were told that it was a new policy within the last 2-3 weeks and that the only place to take food was from the buffet and I don't know if this policy has made it fleet wide.

Not a huge inconvenience, but we did end up ordering room service in the wee hours when we did not feel like dining in.

We had a good time and this was our experience and information only, but thought I would share since I seemed to have missed prior post around this change. I did test the waters a couple of different times of day and night to see if I would get a different answer, but was consistently told no. YMMV

Thanks and this is good to know. We leave this Saturday (YAY) and on vacation, my crew tends to be late night snackers. Thanks for the heads up!

What's to stop you from ordering the food and taking the plate with you?

That's what I was wondering. Do they have guards? You sit at a table, you order the food, and when it's delivered, you pick it up and walk away with it. Tada!

If the OP is referring to simply standing at the podium and ordering takeout, then I can see that being an issue. That kitchen is not equipped to act as room service for a ship of over 4000 people. If everyone could just order takeout, it would be a disaster for those trying to dine there.

Since you have to pass the podium, maybe they are expecting the poor hostesses to stop it? Sort of like the ill-fated attempt at banning take-out from the buffet? ;)

Actually, they do. Even 6 years ago on the Spirit, I tried to take a plate of stuff out of the Blue Lagoon. The hostess, very politely, but also very firmly did stop me and said it couldn't be removed from that area. I sat back down and ate it.

I was referring to LrgPizza's comment about the "guards" and just walking out with your food once you get it. :D

Just always feel bad for the crew....you just know someone is going to try this (and probably not be terribly nice to them while doing so).

No you don't. That's one way to leave, but in all the times I've eaten there, I've never once squeezed past the podium to leave. There's a very large open area that 90% of the people use to leave through, which is right in the middle of the restaurant.

Not to mention that lots of people eating food there aren't even IN the restaurant, but are seated in the bar area, or around the railing overlooking the atrium. There are plenty of places to leave.

My point is that the rule is probably in place to prevent a ton of people calling in take out orders. They kitchen can't handle that.

Sorry but IMHO it's just plain tacky to walk into a sit down full service restaurant and walk out with uncovered plates of food. Would you do this on land? Are you really that desperate to eat it somewhere else? If you're already sitting at a table in the restaurant, why not just eat the food there?

I am not sure about the podium, but when we sailed on the Getaway, we were allowed to order food at the "back" of the seated restaurant side and they actually placed food on a paper plate and wrapped it in cellophane for carryout. I did not try to take the metal trays out of the restaurant, (maybe a bit of a chicken and not wanting to embarrass myself being redirected).

Personally I like to get small snacks and take back to my balcony to eat. I prefer less crowds and like sometimes just a nice quite place to sit and talk with my hubby.

Sometimes my family is too lazy to leave the cabin so I bring food back to them. The room service menu is very limited.

If my family is too lazy, then my family doesn't eat. Why in the world would I reward them for that?

This is not new. The policy was changed when the stopped allowing food in the cabins. They reversed the cabin policy, but the take out food policy remained.
I believe that many reported getting take out at O'Sheehans after the food to cabin policy was rescinded. They even reported getting take out containers, so if this is true, it is something new, as far as what I remember reading on here.

While I can't speak to all ships, we were able to do this last July on the Getaway. I can only speak to that time frame and ship. We would get wings and burgers after a late night in the casino and go back to the cabin. This was definitely after the reversal. Again, not trying to make an issue but just thought I would mention it in general if this was something that you are accustomed to doing as we were. We adapted.

Thanks. I don't do it, but knew I read that folks had done it after the no food back to cabin reversal....glad my memory still serves me well. Thanks again. Edited by NLH Arizona

We done it late at night on a few occasions on Escape TA last October, along with plenty of other people. The staff covered the plates with cling film so we could carry them back to the cabins without dropping anything.

There is nothing better than eating a late night burger in your underwear. Will they have a problem if I sit in the restaurant in my underwear? Pants are overrated.
