You sound like a great friend with a great attitude. I went from Virginia to California with my best friend in a 1974 AMC Gremlin and just two sleeping bags. It ain't gonna get much better than this on RCCL. However, a 15 hour drive is a lot better than a 20 HR drive and so if TX makes sense for you, but you have to do a 4 or 5 day... Look at carnival.

 

Also would not hurt to look at air right now. I've been flying 5 to 7 times a month for the past 3 years and have never seen the kind of fares I've seen in the past two weeks.

Carnival has a 4 night cruise out of Port Canaveral on 9/11 if you could get there by then. Saves 4 hours of driving down to Miami
