Viking excursions

Going on Viking Sea, Mediterranean Odyssey, October 2016. Our excursions just became available so we immediately booked. However, there were already 2 interesting excursions sold out. How often does Viking add additional excursions/excursion times when this happens? Should I continue to check back?

Yes. Continue to check back but also contact Viking and ask them when and if they are going to add more buses to the tour. Try contacting Viking at tellus@vikingcruises.com.

If all else fails you can check in at the Explorer's Desk when you board and see if anything opens ... if nothing else they will put you on a wait list in the event that someone cancels ... and there are some last minute cancellations.

Kathie & anyone else interested,

Back from our Mediterranean Odyssey (Barcelona to Venice). Wonderful trip! Food was excellent on board. Loved the bathrooms (heated floor, amazing shower). We ate most breakfasts and lunches outside on the deck near the World Cafe. The Explorer's Lounge is nice for a drink at night. The entire cruise is friendly and helpful. Tried the Nordic Spa (Snow Grotto, steam room, heated chairs, etc.)--definitely worth doing at least once. It was warmer than I thought it would be but I was still okay with the clothes I brought. Packed half light/half heavier. Lots of layers. I'd be happy to answer any questions anyone has about Viking Sea or the Med. Odyssey trip.

Hi, Lynn...we're taking this cruise in March of 2017...Just wondering about Florence...my wife has some mobility issues and we'd like to pair up with fellow passengers interested in a slower paced tour with less walking but we've received no replies in Roll Call. Do you recall, when you got off the ship in Livorno, if there was tours being set up on the pier?

Did not see tours set up at the dock in Livorno (for Florence/Pisa) but we were some of the first off the ship. In both Livorno & Civitivecchi (for Rome) we pre booked private tours with Rome In Limo before we left. Both ports are far from the destinations. Nice to have a private driver. No waiting for a bus, quicker in traffic, etc. pricey but worth it. You could post looking for another couple to split a tour with you maybe.

Going to be on Viking Sea for November 20/16 cruise Rome to Athens. Everything sounds wonderful so far. My only question is regarding the wi-fi. I don't expect it to be superb, but halfway decent would be lovely. The wi-fi on the Viking river cruises was good enough for my needs, but fewer people onboard meant less usage.

I did a live posting of our cruise and had no issues with the wi-fi. Hope you find it to be the same. :)

TravelLynn,

Thanks so much for taking the time to report back. Glad you had a great trip. The more I read on CC about the Sea and the trip the more excited we get. We sail March 5 and should be able to see excursions this month.

Thanks again,

Kathie

Just booked our excursions today for our January 2017 cruise. I hardly ever go on ship's excursions....I usually much prefer to organise smaller private tours, but I have to say the cost of these excursions compared very favourably to most other cruise lines. We like the "on your own" options, so we can decide what we want to do. Well done Viking.

Lynn,

Followed your posts, if you get the chance can you give me a summary of recommendations for excursions, on your own and Viking included for a April 2017 Mediterranean Odyssey cruise? Most interested in the port far from city stops - Rome, Pisa/Florence ports where time is most critical. I tend to lean towards the small group do-it-yourself tours. We plan to do 3 - 4 days in Venice and a few extra in Barcelona on the back end. Any overall suggestions would be appreciated.

Dark Avenger,

Excellent idea to add to front & back of cruise. We had an extra day in Barcelona & wish we had had a week! With Viking we did the Gaudi architectural tour & the flamingo show at a replica of an old Spanish town. Gaudi was well worth it because it would take a few cab rides to see these sights. The flamingo show was not worth the price. On our own we saw a Spanish guitar with flamingo dancers at the palace of music. Highly recommend this venue. Also toured Gaudi's le pedrera on our own. The Viking tour only drives by this house. The rooftop is amazing. Visit when the sun is setting to see both day & night views.

Monaco we did the included tour in the morning. Worth it. Takes you to the top of the rock to see the Palace & church where Grace Kelly was married & buried. In the afternoon we cabbed to Monte Carlo to check out the casino, have a drink at the Paris Hotel & a pastry at the Cafe de Paris. Get your passport stamped at the visitor center for free.
