Computer Nerd Posted August 18, 2016 #26 Share Posted August 18, 2016 20% on the steakhouse is $7 per person ($3 pp at Cucina!) so we give them that at least because we figure the steakhouse is easily a 75-100pp meal on land ($15-20 tip pp) and there's no way they get 1/3 of the cost from Carnival as a tip, I figure. If we didn't get excellent service, we might give less, but that has never happened in the steakhouse or specialty restaurants on Carnival. glad i don't eat where you do. i'd be broke.
First and Ten Posted August 18, 2016 #27 Share Posted August 18, 2016 (edited) If cruise ship steakhouses were on land, they would be out of business. I disagree. They would just be named "Longhorns" or "Outback Steakhouse" Sent from my iPad using Forums mobile app Edited August 18, 2016 by First and Ten
JROBTX Posted August 18, 2016 #28 Share Posted August 18, 2016 This may not be PC so I'll apologize in advance. Tipping is so personal. Does anyone know if the cruise lines (the corporation) get a cut? It's something that has always nagged at me. Don't get me wrong prepaying gratuities and paying the 10% gratuities on the drinks is so convenient. I also understand pooling so that everyone involved in the services receives a portion. But I think I would feel really deceived if the cruise line used a portion of this as a revenue stream or even to offset "payroll administration cost". :(. I know this happens in some land restaurants when large parties are involved. But at least it's usually stated in writing.
joeyancho Posted August 18, 2016 #29 Share Posted August 18, 2016 Here is my take on tipping at the steak house. While an extra tip is not required, I like to leave the impression that Americans are kind and generous people. So I tip extra. A cruise is already a great vacation bargain. The steak house is a tremendous bargain. As someone stated, it is a much more expensive meal on land. So to leave an extra tip is not out of line. It actually adds to my enjoyment. The joy is in the giving, as they say. I do not go on vacation to save money or lose weight.
