Cape Liberty - repositioning cruise questions - how to get to the port?

We are considering a repositioning cruise on Celebrity Summit for October, but it's confusing to work out the logistics of getting to the port.

 

We live on Long Island, and usually drive to Cape Liberty for round-trip cruises, so we use their parking facilities and it works out fine. But this time, I can't leave my car at the port since I won't be returning to the port after the cruise to pick it up.

 

I figured that post-cruise, I can fly home from San Juan into JFK and use the airtrain and LIRR to get home.

 

But, how should I get to Cape Liberty for departure? I would like to use public trasportation or ship transfers, if possible, as taxis or private transport is too expensive. Can I take the LIRR to JFK and use Celebrity's transfers from there? Or, the LIRR into Manhattan - does Celebrity offer transfers from a Manhattan hotel?

 

 

Does anyone have creative ideas for getting to the port? (This is the make or break issue for the cruise for me, and if it is too stressful to work out, I will give up and not go).

Did you consider flying back to EWR instead of JFK? You could park long term somewhere at EWR and take a cab to the port.

Cruise departs on a Sunday. Oct 16. My husband and I are ok with managing the luggage.

 

I am not familiar at all with EWR, so I haven't considered that option.

Unfortunately this fall on weekends PATH from 33rd St is not an option.

 

From Penn Station you can take the 8th Ave E train downtown to World Trade. The 34th St station is accessible. You take any PATH train one stop to Exchange Place where you go across a small plaza to the light rail and take an 8th Street Bayonne train to 34th St in Bayonne. Call a cab or use Uber to go into the port, which is right there.

How much does the cruise cost for the two of you? How much will a car service cost you to get to Bayonne? Divide the cost of the car service by the number of days of the cruise. You'll see that taking a car service is not much more than the cost of a drink or two every day while your cruising.

In the end it's a personal choice. The folks who live in the NY metro area are much more accustomed to traveling on public transit, so for many of them it's an option to be considered.

We did the repo of the Explorer out of Bayonne. We live near Philly and we had friends drive us up and drop us off - we paid for their gas & tolls.

A car service from our house to the pier is astronomical. The repo cruise is only $299pp inside for 6 days, and return airfare SJU-JFK is $140

I'd be curious to know how much the Celebrity transfer costs per person from JFK, if they have one, and also from NYC. They're usually not a value. The suggestion to take the LIRR to Penn Station and then car service might work best for you.

Unfortunately parking at the port for a repo cruise is not possible at Cape Liberty. The OP could however park at Newark airport, take a cab to the port, and fly back to Newark, which has already been suggested.
