Traveling from Austin to Galveston. What is the best way to get there (7 adults)?

My family plans on driving down the day of departure (no flying). What would be the best way to get there for people who do not have an SUV? I am new to Austin as well, so I am unfamiliar of any potential local businesses that shuttle to port and back. Is renting an SUV my only option?

SUV is fine if you have luggage room.

You pretty much have two options from Austin. Drive yourself, meaning a rental SUV it seems or take a bus. Megabus does regular service from Austin to Houston and it's fairly cheap, then you can catch one of the various cruise shuttles.

 

Or find a friend with a van!

Go in two cars. Paying the second parking fee may be cheaper than renting an SUV for a week (I assume). You are already taking a chance driving day of, I would not risk bus to Houston then shuttle to pier. I am not aware of any Austin based shuttles to Galveston (lived there 10 years).

Clark Travel provides buses to the cruise terminal from Austin. I'm not sure what their rates are. Their website is http://www.clarktravel.net
