Breakaway 9/18-25 NEW to Cruising, lots of Questions!

Hey Everyone! I have to say this forum has been AMAZING while planning our Cruise!

We are first time Cruisers and getting a bit nervous! I have a few questions :)

1: I know you cannot bring Bottles of water or Soda onboard, however...can you bring a sealed package of Ground Coffee for the Coffee maker in the room?

2: How uncomfortable is someone who is overweight? DH is a big guy, on top of already being a little uneasy after reading some nasty comments on Obese people cruising...we are naturally worried about the amount of walking he will have to do.... Any other larger people out there that can let us know about your experience on this cruise? DH is 5'9 and weighs 375lbs. We are on deck 10 in the Front section. I assume its a decent amount of walking to get to most everything, with the size of the ship?

3: How about in Bermuda? We have our Activities for 2 days planned/booked already but plan to spend the 3rd day exploring the Dockyard.

4: Was told the front of the ship is where you can feel the most movement. Does that seem to be true on this ship as well?

You may want to look at the BA's deck plans. Most of the shops, bars, restaurants, activities and casino are centrally located on decks 6-7-8 so you won't be walking long distances everywhere, all the time. The ship has plenty of elevators. The hallways might feel a little cramped when passing a passengers if you are a bit heavy, but not impassable. Your husband should be happy and fine.

1- you can also buy refillable pod cups on amazon and take your own ground coffee. (don't forget about creamer, or a container to take cream back to your cabin. And sweetener.)

2- I think he will be fine, but it is a long walk to the buffet or manhattan dining room. Allow time.

3- Sounds like a fine plan. One good thing is the walk off the pier is not as long as other ports.

4- Yes that is true. When going fast with waves > 8-10' there is some rise and fall. Wind can add sideways motion but that is ship-wide, more at the top. If prone to motion sickness bring meds - for anyone not just forward cabins!

The coffee makers take pods.

Another post showed a picture of the coffee makers on BA that you put the little coffee envelope in to brew. But a cruiser said she brings the Starbucks Vue pods. Do you concur that these will work? We use K Kups but I Think the Vue pods are smaller. Cannot stand bad coffee so want to bring our own!

Thank you

I don't think the Vue pods will work in the Hamilton Beach machines - they are just filter bags full of coffee. Very different then Vue.

Here is the Amazon link for the pod filters that you can fill with your own coffee and seal for the HB machines.

Thanks everyone! Glad to hear it is just the buffet coffee that is bad! If I can have one good cup a day, I will be fine! So, after a bit of looking, it seems you need "soft" pods, not KKups or Vue pods. If we can find some at our grocery store, we may pick some up or just take our chances that that the coffee won't be that bad. We are on a cruise, somethings can't be all bad after all!

Your husband will be fine. On last years cruise my husband just had a spinal fusion operation and he is a big guy. We found it easier to take the nearest elevator down to 6, 7, or 8th floors and do our walking across the ship on these floors so he can stop and rest along the way. The other deck hallways are so narrow, so you might want to keep that in mind. Have a wonderful vacation!

Much has already been said, but...

2 - the ship doesn't feel as big as it is, but it is a bit of a walk from one end to the other. He shouldnt have any trouble getting around though. All shapes and sizes on board - many on scooters and power chair too - and everyone had a good time. I'm a big guy and I didn't feel constricted. The cabin corridors run the length of the ship but are pretty narrow. I usually used the wide outside walkways on 7 or 8 to move quickly from one end of the ship to the other (usually pretty empty) or the pool deck (15). The main center corridors on 6 and 8 are pretty spacious. Deck 7 runs through the casino and it gets congested. The ship definately needs more elevators, but usually the elevator waits weren't bad.

3 - You will probably want to stay off the busses. I found them crowded and claustrophobic. Taxis and shuttle vans are better. Dockyard is flat, but St. George is surprisingly hilly if you are walking it.

4 - we were forward on deck 14 last week when the seas were high due to tropical storm Hermine. Seas going down were 20 +25 feet and there was some movement, but is wasn't bad. The ship is so big that it rides very smoothly, even in the chop. I like the movement. It's soothing. Makes for great sleeping.

Thanks for all the replies! AWesome information!

OhioBob, Did you take the little Train Trolly thing around The area at all? How was that for a bigger person?

I saw it around, but to be honest, I didn't pay much attention to it. I think St George has one as well as Dockyard. The train is small but it's not tiny, so it might be a comfortable way to take a little tour about. But I didn't look at it very closely. All the vehicles in Bermuda are about 3/4 scale anyway since the roads are so narrow.

This is what the train looks like. As you see, it's not too small.

If you are going to Hamilton or St. George you really should take the ferry. They are roomy, comfortable and fast. Plus the trip over water around the island is almost a tour in itself. At $5 each way, the ferries are a good deal. Even better with a transportation pass. If you need a one day pass, I have 2 unused ones I will sell you cheap. :o)

Thanks! We actually rented a boat to take out on our own for a few hours and booked a tour of the island as well. Mostly because we were worried about the size of public transportation there. I'm just worried that the walk to the clock tower mall might be long and I know that little train takes you there.
