we have 10 of us going on the majesty of the seas RCCL in december on a 3 day cruise

if we split up to do different things on board the ship and want to get in touch with one another we thought we would bring our cell phones to call one another.

is this going to work on board?

There are clocks on the ship, so don't worry about a watch. (I haven't worn one in YEARS!) Take a travel clock for your room, though, no clocks there!

There are also phones in your room and most ships have voicemail. House phones are also located in several areas of the ship, you can call a cabin from those.

We have cruised with a group before and never tried to stay together during the day. It took a whole lot of pressure of everyone and no one had to worry what the other was doing. We did have fun running into each other onboard at times.

It might not be a bad idea to bring your cell phone along in case you need to make a call before you leave the states or when you come back into cell phone range on the last day. You never know what might crop up. One example would be if you need to call the airlines to reschedule a flight. Just a thought....

Whenever we cruise with anyone, we have one steadfast rule. We always do our own thing and if it happens to be what our friends are doing, great! We see each other at dinner and tell them what area of the deck we'll be sitting on. Our neighbor had a bad cruise because people in their group were mad at them because they didn't do tours, etc. with the group. This made her feel guilty and all she could do was keep apologising. You can always plan to meet somewhere at a certain time then plan from there. Personally I don't want to carry a cell phone or walkie talkie around with me. (And a lot of people complain about walkie talkies and their use on board ship!)

No, it won't. Your cell phones will only work in Miami or possibly the Bahamas if you have coverage there. Otherwise, you will be out of range of a cell tower shortly after leaving port.

Actually your cell phones WILL work on Majesty... Majesty and Navigator were the first 2 RCI ships to get their own "cell towers". Cell phone DO work on them, even in the middle of the ocean. You must have international service enabled, and it's not cheap. It varies from provider to provider, but in my case Cingular charged $1.49 per minute.

Bonnie - I would swear these words came from my mouth! It is the BEST rule when traveling with others. We also make the deal that we don't buy each other drinks - this way no one feels that they "owe" someone a drink. Both of these rules, stated before the cruise, sure make it a lot more stress free.:D

You're in a confined space, you cannot get lost and there are many clocks everywhere on the ship. Nothing is more disturbing than hearing the cell phones from any large group ringing all over the ship. It's not like half of one group is going to be on one ship and the other half is going to be on another. There was a group from Mexico on a recent Summit cruise who used their cell phones all over the ship, in the dining room, show lounges and at the pool, and it really was a pain to hear constant cell phones ringing day and night. Plus, unlike Trent, our charges to use the ship's cell phone tower was $6.50 a minute, which is insanely expensive, so we put the cells away and never used them to call home on the ship.

Just a note here,

If you have Nextel phone with "Off the network" WT capability they work just fine as long as you are within 6 miles of eachother. That said, we all take ours along and use the earbud accessory so we don't make a sound contacting eachother!:D

Thank you very much! :) No offense, but I was recently on an airport bus and the guy next to me was on his Nextel phone. Great, now I can be annoyed by BOTH sides of a conversation carried on at maximum volume, punctuated by an annoying beep. Thank heavens it was a short ride. :D

To the OP, if you have a dollar store nearby, I got a cute little watch on a keychain that clips onto anything when I absolutely have to have a watch. Great stuff at the dollar store.

INHO, I think the absolute worst thing any cruise line has ever done is place those silly cell towers on ships.

There is absolutely nothing that irritates me more than seeing someone walking around talking on the phone. Especially on a vacation.

To me, there is no reason, other than an emergency situation, where a phone call is needed onboard a ship. And if you have an emergency, the ship to shore service was apporpriate for that.

We are going on Navigator in December 06, and I sincerely hope that there are not hundreds of people just chatting on cell phones, or all thos irritating rings....

I have to agree with the above poster. I would take a cell phone but would not use them in public places. Our cell phone did come in handy last year due to all the hurricanes. We were able to call airlines, the hotel, and the ship to find out what was going on.

i didn't mean for it to turn into a whole debate. i just wanted to know if we all separated on the ship since there are so many of us we would be able touse the cellphones to contact one another.

we decided we would not do this. we would go our own ways and meet up at a declared place at a specific time...............or i told them..........they could find me in the casino at night by the slots
