Document Question---Esp. KY cruisers

My Sister and I will be cruising next month and we had a question about her birth certificate. The only one she has is issued by the state(well, Commonwealh) of Kentucky, but it is one of the mini ones that looks more like a credit card. Has anyone tried to use this type of birth certificate and were you successful? Need help asap, as she may need to try and get a different type and time is winding down!

Have heard that the card size ones are laminated, and thus don't work-they need to be able to feel the official raised seal. IF you can feel the raised seal, then the size does not matter.;)

I've heard that those tiny laminated ones aren't as acceptable. How about getting a passport? They will be required in the near future, so if you are planning on cruising or going to Canada or Mexico in the next few years, you're going to need a passport anyway.

My husband had one of those card things and had to go to Italy for business. It was not excepted. Get an official copy because they wouldn't except it for his passport, in California that is.

Thanks for all of the feedback...haven't been able to speak with my Sister, but according to Mom she went ahead and requested a new one today.

A few years ago when My wife and I went on a cruise she had a card birth certificate from Virginia. Our travel agent said that they would not accept it. She ordered one on line ( can't remember the price ) and everything went fine.

FYI - Someone mentioned the raised seal. Not all states issue copies with a raised seal. Some states are now using the watermark paper. Either is acceptable.

Hmm... all of our birth certificates are regular sized (we were all born in KY). I've never seen a smaller size. I'd say getting a new one is the way to go.
