Which Area ?

Hi All,

Have been to San Juan 4 times as a cruise stop and embarked from there once. We are very familiar with Old San Juan and have stayed at the Marriott Stellaris before.

We are looking to stay 3 nights post cruise in another area with these prerequisites;

We are Marriott Rewards members so would like to stay at one

We would like a nice pool with beach access being secondary

We would like a place we could walk around easily to stores and restaurants

Is there a Marriott that fits that?

Thanks !

Have you linked your MR account to an SPG account? If you don't have an SPG account, go to the MR website and see what you need to do. You'll then be able to use MRs to stay at Starwood properties by transferring MR points over to your new SPG account. You'll get SPG stay credit and points for the stay, not MR. But, for the next year or two, you will be able to play "both ways"...

That would bring the Sheraton Old San Juan into play. It has all that you have asked for. It has a rooftop pool (no beach) and is right there in Old San Juan so you can take advantage of walking the area with access to plenty of good non-chain restaurants and shops.

If you didn't need access to restaurants and shopping, I'd say try the Ritz Carlton Dorado or the St. Regis Bahia Beach (that is, if you have enough points ;) )

Isla Verde.

That's where I'd spend three days if I had them!

I second the Courtyard Isla Verde. We've stayed there, twice now, one night pre-cruise both times. We love it there, the employees have always been very nice and helpful and we would not hesitate to stay there again.

It checks off two of your prerequisites: It's a Marriott AND it's located right on a beautiful beach and also has a beautiful pool area. Another plus...it's right across from San Juan International Airport, so very convenient for a post cruise stay. I think the cab rides we had from the airport to the Courtyard were five minutes.

I'm not certain about places nearby to walk around with stores and restaurants, I think the closest would be a few blocks away. If you're interested, there is a mall that is HUGE. It's called Plaza las Americas and we were told it's the largest mall in the Caribbean. It's very nice and modern. Their JC Penny is at least four floors (that we know of) and each of those floors was the size of our WalMart. The mall itself seems to have all of the anchor stores and many of the stores popular here. We didn't get much time since we got there at about 8:30PM and they were closing at 10PM. There is also a food court. Why did we end up at the mall? Long story - hubby's luggage was lost by airline and all he had in his carry-on in the way of clothing was a bathing suit. Very easy to get cabs at the hotel.

Pictures of the Courtyard...I did a review of our cruise last year and included a lot of pictures of the Courtyard, the pool/grounds area, and the beach. That starts on Page 2, Post #22 (2nd post from top). I've attached the link to it and hoping it opens on page 2 for you.

Thanks for your input pghsteelerfan !

I have been reading more and I think that for 'walking' purposes the Stellaris might actually be the place for us. We have seen OSJ quite a bit already but this location of Marriott seems to have the best for restaurants and accessibility.

I have stayed in Isla Verde and Condado several times. I like the beach in Isla Verde better, but Condado is a much better neighborhood IMO. If you want a Marriott property, both the Marriott Stellaris Resort and Casino, and the Renaissance La Concha are great picks. La Concha has great pools, including an adult-only infinity pool. It has suites with a kitchenette. There are tons of shops and rrstaurants around. It is also a quick 75 cent bus ride to Old San Juan. It would probably cost you more points, but La Concha is a great choice. The Marriott is a couple blocks away and is also a solid pick.

Is the Renaissance La Concha a Marriott property? We will be using points.

You are very welcome. :) Before we chose the Courtyard for our cruise in 2013, the Marriott Stellaris was the one I really wanted, but was just way over our budget. :( I have seen many good reviews of it, so I'm sure that's a great choice. :)
