katiel53 Posted November 8, 2005 #1 Share Posted November 8, 2005 Is there any place near the cruise ship docks to buy a wheel of Gouda Cheese? If so, do you know how much it costs? Several years ago I bought a wheel in Curaco and brought it home. It was wonderful. Thanks. Katie
lilrod Posted November 11, 2005 #2 Share Posted November 11, 2005 Hi: Katiel53, you can buy the cheese on the supermarket. When you go to the shopping center, just cross it and in the next street you can find it. It has a chinese name. But I live in Puerto Rico and I always buy cheese when I go to Aruba. katiel53 Posted November 20, 2005 Author #3 Share Posted November 20, 2005 Thanks for the information Lilrod. I just went to the Aruba site today and saw your message. Do you have any idea of the price? We are sailing from Puerto Rico. It's one of our favorite islands. Katie
TikiTodd Posted November 23, 2005 #4 Share Posted November 23, 2005 This is a tad of a repeat to what lilrod said, but anyway.... Our tour bus driver explained that Chinese folks are prominent in the Aruba supermarket market. He pointed out supermarket row as we began our island tour, then I went back to shop! There is a transit bus terminal very near the pier, and it's on this map: http://www.caribline.com/islands/ar/ormap.shtml. The bus was fast and clean, and they took US$, and it was only a few minutes to the supermarkets, they're on the right side heading away from downtown, you can't miss them. They are on LG Smith Blvd heading left on that map. I was stunned STUNNED by the array of cheese!
fti Posted December 1, 2005 #5 Share Posted December 1, 2005 Is there any place near the cruise ship docks to buy a wheel of Gouda Cheese? If so, do you know how much it costs? Meats and cheeses from other countries are not allowed to be brought into the US!
tinad Posted December 4, 2005 #6 Share Posted December 4, 2005 the supermarket is Ling&sons and as far as I know you can bring cheese as long as it is encased as Gouda.Enjoy Aruba it is a lovely island.
lilrod Posted December 6, 2005 #7 Share Posted December 6, 2005 Katiel at this moment the price of the cheese is $17.00 US. I am going this week on a cruise and visit Aruba. I just asked somebody that went 2 weeks ago and she told me the price. At this moment, I think that it is very cheap at this price. Katie333 Posted December 28, 2005 #8 Share Posted December 28, 2005 Depending on the size of the wheel that is very cheap instead. A good sized hunk of real Gouda can cost about $7 US which would be about 1/20th of what the entire wheel is. It would pay to ensure that you won't have any issues bringing it home. tinad Posted December 29, 2005 #9 Share Posted December 29, 2005 YOU CAN TAKE CHEESE FROM ARUBA TO THE US. I DO THINK IT HAS TO BE SEALED ( IN THE WAX) . ONE YEAR I WAS STOPPED BY CUSTOMS SINCE I HAD A COOLER. THE AGENT DID CHECK THE CHEESE BUT HE WAS LOOKING FOR OPEN PKGS I THINK. REMEMBER NO PLANTS OR FRUIT. ENJOY ARUBA.
katiel53 Posted December 30, 2005 Author #10 Share Posted December 30, 2005 Sorry I never saw all the replies. With the changes made by CruiseCritic, I don't get notification on posts as I did previously. I did buy cheese when in Aruba. Coming off the ship, there is a little mall and in the "general store" they had wheels of cheese for $18.00. I had no trouble bringing it home. It is in the wax and it's great. Thanks for all the replies. Katie
tinad Posted January 1, 2006 #11 Share Posted January 1, 2006 Did you buy a big wheel of gouda? How much did it weigh?
jalakim Posted January 12, 2006 #12 Share Posted January 12, 2006 Katie, we too are going to panama on April 17th. We have a great group going on the roll call site. You should come over and join up. Kim
katiel53 Posted January 13, 2006 Author #13 Share Posted January 13, 2006 I don't know how many pounds the wheel weighed. I am guessing at least 5 lbs. Kim, thanks but we are going April 7. Not much action on our roll call though.
tinad Posted January 15, 2006 #14 Share Posted January 15, 2006 Katie: Thanks for the advise> I presume you purchased the cheese downtown not @ the local supermarket ? If anyone is interested the supermarket has the largest selection of cheese I have ever seen. Take the bus tell the driver you want to goto the market, also lots of venders outside the market.
bulldogmom Posted January 17, 2006 #15 Share Posted January 17, 2006 How do you keep the cheese from going bad while enjoying the rest of your cruise?? DH and I are HUGE cheese fans and would love to bring some back with us if possible.
LuAnn Posted January 20, 2006 #16 Share Posted January 20, 2006 I am also a huge cheese fan..I would assume, based on the posts, that it is ok to bring back to the US...even California? (our home port) Thanks LuAnn
katiel53 Posted January 20, 2006 Author #17 Share Posted January 20, 2006 Brooke, I just kept it in our cabin. It didn't need to be refrigerated until I cut into it. The wax protects it. Now that it was cut open, it 's in my refrig. I think it weighed about 5 lbs or maybe even more. It was quite heavy.
