dmc6469 Posted January 3, 2017 #1 Share Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) So I got Voom for using my cell phone for Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, etc. My phone will be on for this but do I need to contact my carrier and do anything about my service? Being in Mexico, I don't want to be charged international roaming charges so how do I avoid that? I used to just keep my phone off once we sailed and just used the internet in the library but now that we are allowed to use our phones, I'm a little confused as to how this will work. Just put the phone in Airplane mode and then turn on WiFI. No carrier charges this way.
cruisemomandson07 Posted January 3, 2017 #3 Share Posted January 3, 2017 You'll need to put your phone on airplane mode and keep the wifi on. You will connect to the ships wifi using a code they will give you upon embarkation. :) You won't have to do anything else. dmc6469 Posted January 3, 2017 Author #4 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Ahh, that's how it works. Perfect. Thank you both
Biker19 Posted January 3, 2017 #5 Share Posted January 3, 2017 If your phone and carrier support it, you can also enable WiFi calling. With this feature you can use your phone as if you were connected to the cell network and make/receive calls/texts. Try it at home before you sail. Viv0828 Posted January 3, 2017 #6 Share Posted January 3, 2017 (edited) If you have Verizon, they have a plan for $2 a day while in any Mexican port that features unlimited calling, texting and data - just like if you were home in the USA. This is true only in port. It must be set up ahead of time with them before you leave. It worked very well this summer in Cabo, puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan. jamesr3939 Posted January 3, 2017 #7 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Keep in mind the ship's WiFi will log you out after two hours of no activity. So if you are expecting an important call you might not be connected.
whirlybird3 Posted January 3, 2017 #8 Share Posted January 3, 2017 Yes, enable wifi calling in your settings on your phone. It worked great during my TA on the Harmony. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
