Serenade of the Seas is it the cruise for us.

Thinking of booking the Serenade of the Seas Southern Caribbean cruise but I'm thinking we may be a bit disappointed with the ports of call, I've been reading through a few reviews and also a live "I'm here now" report that showed lots of photos,It looks to me like the ship docks at places that look a bit like industrial warehouse estates rusty tin roofs etc., nothing like the docks I would imagine in the Caribbean.

 

Can anyone give me any info or reassurance that it's the right cruise for us?

Just did 11 day Thanksgiving cruise on Serenade. Try booking a Royal tour or private that takes you around the islands and away from the ports.

 

We loved the ship, the crew, and the cruise.

Did the Xmas /New Years cruise - booked a dive and Jost van dyke beach in Tortola, and segways in Antigua , always live st Maarten , this time went to orient beach kinto-ki ( nice chairs/restaurant/beach boy)... can't say anything great about st kitts. Too many days at sea for me on a ship that needs a few more upgrades ( like the casino)

Spent 100+ days on Serenade in last 2 yrs, beautiful ship great trip! The Caribbean ports you going to couple are little industrial looking, some have shops there and some you walking right into town. You'll be fine and enjoy!

I think you may have a misconception about what ports in the Caribbean look like. Industrial is the general norm.

 

I can only speak regarding St Lucia, Antigua, and Barbarous. I wouldn't walk out to the towns in these ports, however, if you find either a tour or taxi, these have spots very nice and unique. As with most of these Islands, there is a lot of poverty mixed in with wealth. It would be a shame to miss a tour on the other side of these islands.

 

Bonaire and Aruba, are different. Aruba is more or less a desert. Bonaire is a great diving destination and some of the other islands are as well. We rented golf carts on Bonaire to take us around the island. Took us about two hours (hint, you want a drink on the ride, get it before you get away from the main town). Aruba has some interesting things to see the first time but the island is still very warm even though it is winter months for us.

Absolutely. If you're expecting all of the ports to look like a place such as Labadee, you will be disappointed. On that itinerary you are visiting fairly small islands that aren't as touristy and commerical as a place like St. Thomas or St. Maarten is. These are industrial ports that are the lifeline or the resident's economy and livelihoods. With that comes some ugly scenery but remember it's only a small fraction of the island.

Barbados was one port in my review i put that I felt more like a longshoreman than a tourist. But some of these islands don't put the money into big fancy terminals, but once away from the port it was a great island.

True, but its easy to see how people can see or expect a Diamonds International and Senor Frogs waiting for them.

I was thinking more like Cozumel or Nassau might be in people's expectations. St Thomas might be included.

Thanks everyone for your replys,

I'm going to take another look at some of the ports on this itinerary and make a decision next week.

On our last cruise around the Caribbean the ports were lovely you could spend the day around them visiting café s & restaurants and doing a little shopping,

We chose a 10 day Mar 2017 Serenade of Seas cruise because of the ports & the Radiance class ship. I realize some ports are suitable for right off the ship touring while others will require a taxi or tour to get a good impression of the Island we are visiting. If you are mobile, there should be lots to enjoy after all its the Caribbean:)
