138east Posted January 25, 2017 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2017 Has anyone used Uber or Lyft as car service from a Manhattan hotel to Cape Liberty? There haven't been a lot of posts about using Uber or Lyft to go from Manhattan to Cape Liberty. Going between NY and NJ gets complicated because of the interstate travel. NYC taxis are not required to take you and can charge a premium if they do. Uber and Lyft charge a surcharge: NJ surcharge A $20 surcharge is added to all trips that cross between NYC and NJ. This covers river crossing toll charges as well as time and expense the driver incurs returning to their primary service area. Get some quotes from Dial7 and Carmellimo as well as Uber and Lyft so you have a basis for comparison. You need a base rate and tolls and should expect to pay an 18-20% tip on the base rate. Another thing to consider is that the large car services know how to get to Cape Liberty whereas an Uber or Lyft driver might never have made the trip. We have jumped into NYC cabs after cruises for the ride back to our hotel in New Jersey many times.
