Shipboard credit issue

Hello. I had a question re shipboard credit. Last January while on the Dawn I book another NCL trip while on board & received a $125 shipboard credit for the upcoming cruise. During the year I switched ships for my convenience but was told that the shipboard credit does not carry over to the changed booking (it was specific to the trip I booked while on board). Also the ship I changed to was not available at the time I booked the 1st ship (Spirit out of NY in Dec, at least I think this was the case, please let me know if it is not). My travel agent contacted NCL & they told her the credit does not carry over. I believe her, she's always been good to deal with. Can anyone give me some advice? I was going to wait until I was on the ship & talk to the front desk but wanted to see if anyone has had a similar experience. I don't see why I shouldn't get it, it's not like & cancelled the 1st cruise & then 1 month later booked another, I simply switched ships, always keeping my deposit w/ NCL. :)

Thank you so much for the help.

Here's an example. Last week I booked on board. The guy was on the ship TV saying you would get the best price, your choice of cabin, plus an onboard credit. So I signed up. He took my Latitudes number.

Last evening I was browsing the NCL site and just for the kicks I checked the price for my category. The Latitudes price was $140 less than the price I signed-up for on board.

Called them this AM. They said the site price I saw was a promo and I had the choice of rebooking at the new price in which case I would lose the OBC which was $100. Rebooked even tho just saved $40 net, Had a $100 OBC on my recent cruise but since we don't drink had a hard time spending it and ended up getting stuff in shop that really didn't need or want.

I didn't put up a stink, but I must say I felt somewhat hustled.

Just returned from the Jewel and had the NCL rep price a cruise for us which included $100 OBC. She clearly said that if we change ANYTHING about the booking the OBC would go away. There's no way around it, just accept it.

Besides, we had the pricing from our regular TA for that itinerary and her price was WAY better than NCL's anyway, even with the OBC, so not an issue for us.

What do you mean you can't use OBC for tips? The tips are charged on your account anyway. Are you saying if you send yourself OBC ahead of time (which we always do) we can't use our own money for the tips? Sounds funky to me.....

lilbit,

If you received an on-board credit from NCL, you cannot use it towards the $10 per day per person service fee and in the Casino. You can use it for drinks, excursions, gift shop, Specialty Restaurants

I know it sounds unfair, but it's the policy.

Happy Sailing,

Monty

Not exactly.. The OBC's you buy for yourself, or that others buy for you, are "refundable credits." These can be applied towards anything and everything on your folio. Any OBC given by the cruiseline for almost any reason can not be applied towards the service charge or casino.

  Log42...Okay so if I am getting this right. If you buy on board credit to use for yourself or for a gift for our kids cruise, that all can be used for tips, and EVERYTHING on your bill. If you you receive an OBC from the ship for some reason that cannot??? This is all soooo confusing!!

Is there anybody out there that can clear up the issure of tips being paid if you purchase your own on board credit versus being awarded on board credit by NCL?? I want to purchase credit for my kids but don't want to put too much on the credit if it can't be applied to all charges.

Thanks!!

Glamourgal, what you said is exactly it. Any credit you buy for yourself can be used for anything--it's your "mnoney", and that includes tipping.

The OBC that NCL gives is a gift, but a gift with strings (which they certainly were up front with me about too). It can not be used for tips or casino. We booked on board last May for this February and got $200 total OBC for our cabin. We figure it will pay for 2/3 of our bar bill. Not bad! Or we look at it as having paid for most of the 2 excursions we booked. Again, not bad!

Enjoy your cruise and don't worry.

:)
