Cozumel for Foodies

Hey everyone. We will be in Cozumel next month during our Allure cruise. My wife and I love to eat and hope some of you can suggest a restaurant for a really great lunch or dinner. We are adventurous eaters. We really enjoy experiencing different dishes originating from various regions of Mexico. We are completely open-minded; up for something dressier and elevated; or off-the-beaten path and casual. What we are not looking for is the typical Americanized Mexican food (guac, nachos, etc.).

We have a handful of favorite places in Playa del Carmen but don't think we want to bother with taking the ferry over.

Thanks in advance for the suggestions.

For a fancy place, I suggest Kintas. La Cocay is another (not sure if it's open for lunch or just dinner) Downtown. North of the plaza.

The view from the Museum café is wonderful. Menu is simple but good and the art work is worth strolling around. It's on the waterfront across from the ferry pier.

For casual places, that serve Yucatan style food and cater to locals, look for loncherias (lunchettes with fixed prices--food on the run) or Cocina Economicas. Most of these are downtown. Find a good San Miguel map. Here's a get started list.

--For a wide selection, try the El Mercado, Avenida 20 just east of the plaza. Lots of kiosks and small cafes.

--Las Flamitas is a good Cocina to look for on Avenida 25 just south of Morales. Yucatan food, with several daily specials. No English spoken here but they are welcoming and will get you served and understood.

--If she's open, Tonitas on Rosada Sales between Avenida 10 and 15 (just south of the plaza), has great breakfasts and lunches. Her pozole is wonderful.

For seafood from a seafood market, San Carlos Pescardrio out on Avenia 50 Biz is worth the taxi ride.

If you want a beach atmosphere away from the crowds, Bob Marley's Rasta Bar/Paradise Café at the southern tip of the island has great ceviche and coconut shrimp. Playa Bonita just a short way up the east side has fantastic, ceviche gorditas and Chen Rio, a public beach on the east side serves a whole snapper, prepared the local way.

Enjoy your food tour and visit.
