teacher2cruiser Posted March 16, 2017 #1 Share Posted March 16, 2017 We will be on the Grandeur nine night cruise out of Baltimore June 1. Can anyone recommend and comment on any of the ship's excursions for Halifax or Saint John. I'd also be interested in reading any safe and recommended independent tours. We are a couple in late fifties. Thanks!
shipgeeks Posted March 17, 2017 #2 Share Posted March 17, 2017 Are you walkers? We have enjoyed both cities just walking on our own. In Halifax you will be docked right at the boardwalk, with lots of interesting waterfront attractions. Or you can walk up the hill, to a very old cemetery, and the Citadel. St. John is a nice town, with a city market, park, varied neighborhoods.

When you leave the ship and get out on the main street, just look for the signs or ask in the building you walk tthrough. I did this tour in October and we saw alot of the city and stopped at the city market and the reversing falls. I think it was $10 a person. It is a city bus and the driver was very interesting. Traveling Library Posted March 17, 2017 #5 Share Posted March 17, 2017 The Immigration Museum at Halifax Pier 21 is wonderful and your ship should dock very nearby. Then walk along the waterfront and go to the Maritime Museum and see the Titanic exhibit and the one about the explosion in Halifax Harbour during WW1. We never made it to the Citadel. It was too foggy. We just have to go back!

KStevens79 Posted April 1, 2017 #7 Share Posted April 1, 2017 For St John I can recommend using Roy's tours. We used him last October, and we're using him again this October too... http://roystours.webs.com/ When we were in Halifax we used... http://halifaxcruiseshipshoretours.com/ We did the highlights and Peggy's Cove tour. We skipped the Maple Syrup place and lunch to spend more time seeing the other places. They will design the tour to what you want to see. Hope that helps! Have a great time! The DSs want to go deep sea fishing, so I am going to arrange that in Halifax. The DH and I will do a bit of sight seeing. For everyone getting anxious about me sending the DSs off by themselves, they are 22 and 18. We are still looking for ideas in St Johns. I wouldn't worry about your boys, they'll be fine. I loved St John, Roy took us to some very beautiful places! I'm sure you could get a few more couples to join you (post on the thread for your Roll Call). Roy loves his "home." I can't wait to go back! St John and Bar Harbor were my two favorite places! mtsnd1900 Posted April 24, 2017 #10 Share Posted April 24, 2017 This past October, we used River Bay Adventures, and had Jim as a guide. It was one of my most favorite days of all my cruises. we arranged to meet up at Tucker park, spent the day kayaking around the Kennebecasis River , then did a driving tour afterwards and hit up the spots that were of interest to us, as well as all the tourist spots and a few local spots. Jim grew up and still resides in this seaside town, and can give you an unmatched locals aspect. Check out their web page, http://riverbayadventures.com/Index.html and their trip advisor reviews at https://www.tripadvisor.com/Attracti...Brunswick.html I would highly recommend Jim as a guide and will be calling him this fall if we go back up to Canada on a fall cruise. maryann ns Posted April 24, 2017 #11 Share Posted April 24, 2017 To help with your research you should be aware of the correct spelling for Saint John, New Brunswick and St. John's, Newfoundland.
pacruise804 Posted May 1, 2017 #12 Share Posted May 1, 2017 Thank you. Do you have any restaurants or bars that you might recommend? We went to Saint John on our first cruise (Carnival, August 2012) and did the Moosehead pub crawl. Assuming the information in the reviews have the same pubs we went to, we really enjoyed O'Leary's (the last pub) for atmosphere and music. It was a pleasant easy walk if I remember correctly.
