HUB App Chat Question

I have done some reading and I am a little confused on what I have read. On our cruise we only want the chat feature for the whole cruise since we will be with friends. Is it $5 a day for the chat feature or $5 for the whole cruise? I know the social media is $5 a day and we have no interest in anything but the chat feature for the Hub appWe are not interested in anything but the chat feature. I am sorry if this is a repeat. Thank you for the help! :D

Thank you so much!! Thats so much better than $30 bucks just to chat during the cruise LOL

Do we purchase the chat feature on the app after we have boarded? How does that work?

Yes, once you are on the ship put your phone in airplane mode but keep wifi on and connect to the ships wifi. The app will walk you through it.

Download the Carnival Hub now. When you do, you'll get the countdown clock and at the bottom you will see a button that states "I'm aboard, log me in". From there, just follow the prompts to get signed up for the chat feature and have your onboard account charged.

I think this is a great price! I can't wait to try it! Last year when we were on the Independence of the Seas, I had no way to get ahold of my husband when he abandoned me for the casino! I had no clue where he went. I wanted to read for a little bit by the pool and he said he was going to go explore and "be right back". 3 hours later I finally gave up and went back to the room! This year, bringing kids, I wanted a way to stay connected. Heck, $5/person for the whole cruise?! Much cheaper than walkie-talkies, AND I wouldn't want to carry those around anyways!

Do you think he will want to download the app for his device?

Hmmmm! Just saying.

It really only works if the person you are trying to chat with has their hub app open at the time you want to chat with them. Hence I rarely could reach my husband on our recent Magic cruise:eek:. But if you keep checking it and making sure the wifi is "still" connected it will work.

Thank you for sharing this. I totally mistook what this was... and I shouldn't have. It's called "chat" - not messaging. It is a chat app, not a messaging app. We'll go with something more robust to the realities of life aboard ship, not relying on both of us to be staring at our phones all the time waiting for a message! :)

We used it on our last cruise. It is $5. per device for the whole cruise. But like others have said, you have to keep checking for messages. It seemed I would send a message, but before hubby read it, I had found him anyway. It can be a bit slow to reach the intended device.

I agree. Wow....I thought it was more of a messaging thing where you could get messages and check when you want with notifications. Bummer. I don't want to be staring at my phone constantly. but a quick "hey, I took the kids to the room to change" would be nice to send!

So if I understand correctly, for $5 per person per day, you have access to Facebook and some other website. One question I have now though is whether this $5 per person per day access to Facebook includes access to Facebook Messenger or do they somehow block it since it is (at least on my phone) a different app.

We used it on the Splendor a few weeks ago, and it worked great! My dd and I both downloaded the app before we left NY, and once on the ship activited it. $5 for the whole week per person - well worth it. DD likes to sleep in in the mornings, while I am at the gym at 6 a.m. She would chat message me when she was up. If I was in the casino and she was relaxing in the room, we could stay in touch. My phone would do a sound (like I get when my calendar pops up a reminder of a date I entered) when she would chat text me. We usually lock our phones in the safe as soon as we get to our cabins on any of our cruises. I will definitely use the hubb app again on a CCL ship that has it.

When I used this in December, I did not use the Chat feature, but got notifications for reminders for activities, etc. They worked just like any other calendar feature and I heard a noise. Are you all saying that the Chat part does not offer any notifications settings, or do you just need to be sure to turn that on? Thanks!

I think we're kind of talking past each other. Many of us were looking for a very specific messaging capability, often referred to as toaster notifications. They're named after toasters and how you can set the bread to toast and it will finish and pop up and wait there for you until you're ready to take the toast and eat it. Many messaging systems use these toaster notifications now. It allows either side in a conversation to enter a reply and the reply will sit there and sit there and sit there until the other side is ready to read it and then the conversation can go back the other way.

This message may have been entered using voice recognition. Please excuse any typos.

If you get the social media package for $5 per day messenger works. The HUB app is different.

Thanks. That's my understanding now. My comment was in response to obx_fintooToday's concern that because HUB didn't support messaging notifications per the toaster model that it didn't support notifications at all, i.e., for activities(?). I was clarifying that they need not be related.

I will say that when we used the HUB app in January on the Splendor the notifications were just like text messaging. I had my notifications for the app on my phone set the same way as my regular texting app. There were a few times that we never got the "chat" from the other person though so I wouldn't rely on it %100. Overall for the price it is pretty good for keeping in touch on the ship.

We were recently on the Breeze and used the Hub app for the first time. Wasn't sure we would really use the chat feature since it was just hubby and me, but for $10 total for the week, it did come in handy a few times.

I initially paid for the Social media addition to have Facebook and twitter. I don't have any other social media accounts, but figured these two would be nice. It was fun uploading pics to Facebook. My only complaint was any time a news story was posted with a link, I couldn't get to it because I didn't have the internet feature. That was an extra $42 per device for the week on top of the $30 and $5 I had already paid. By the 3rd day I decided to add it and figured it would be pro-rated and not a full $42. Wrong! Lesson learned. If you want to have any of the add-on connections, get them at the start of the cruise.

Good thing the beverage packages don't work that way. (They don't, do they? Could you imagine paying the full freight for the booze package for just the last day of the cruise?)
