Comprehensive list of things to do for college kids 1 day in Nassau 8-6pm?

Our family of 10 is coming to Nassau in May for just one day from 8AM-6PM on the Norwegian Gem. We gave the kids the cruise - excursions are on them. They are all "poor" college students on a budget. They want to do something - NO CITY OR HISTORICAL TOURS - FUN THINGS - while in Nassau one day. They are the full range of body types - from daredevil athletes to very chubby ones, so things like zip lining are not an option for all.

 

No to Atlantis. No to paid beach resorts. But the beach is a possibility. Maybe snorkeling. Who knows what they'll choose!

 

Has someone posted a comprehensive list of non-ship tour related things-to-do (some that are reasonably priced,) as I saw for Port Canaveral?

 

6 of them have never been on a cruise, nor to the Bahamas before.

 

Our family will be meeting next month and the kids will be deciding together what they want to do.

Not a comprehensive list for sure, but we have travelled to Nassau several times with teens/college aged kids.

 

The straw market (free) is an experience. It is crowded, hot, same items repeated over and over.... "Pretty lady, what you want, I got it" at every step... We usually walk thru rather quickly, sometimes picking up some "treasure". If you cut through the whole market to the next street back, the shops are nicer (air conditioned) and there is a rum cake store with free samples, also a liquor store and jewelry store. We had a coupon from the ship for a free charm at one of the shops. That store had free rum punch samples, too.

 

Senor Frogs- HUGE hit for our group. Big college party type atmosphere, reasonably priced fancy drinks, a conga line, dancing, twisted balloon hats, cute pics outside on the swing or with the frog.... The drinking age is 18, not than anyone carded our teens. Has a little gift shop of Frog-esque merchandise.

 

Junkanoo beach, head down to Senor Frogs, follow the sidewalk to the beach. There are signs. It is probably a ten minute walk. Very reasonable drinks (three beers, three shots for 9.99 kind of thing) The beach is a public one, free, with restrooms. You can rent chairs or water items (no jetski or anything like that!) It will not be anywhere near as nice as the private island, but it is free!

 

You can walk to John Watlings Rum Distillery (past Junkanoo) another ten minutes or so... see the distillery (barn), small bar/gift shop area, maybe a free sample. Not wild about straight rum samples, this was not one we would repeat. It was hot, the kids got sweaty and whiny on the way...

 

Greycliff Chocolate and Cigars, closer than the Rum Distillery, along the way to it, stop on the way back or only go that far... free chocolate sample, see them rolling cigars. There are paid excursions there, too. We just walked to it and did the free part.

 

As for paid excursions on Nassau, we rode Segways, which were really fun! We also swam with the Stingrays on Blue Lagoon.

Can you add the link to the Port Canaveral "things to do" ?

We haven't had much luck with that port. You cannot walk to anything from the cruise port.

 

We have rented a car there several times, tried to parasail three times (got cancelled due to weather conditions each time). We did a segway tour there, too, got a deal thru Groupon.

 

I am thinking we may just stay on the ship at this port this year!

It was free.

You finish up in a small bar area and buy drinks (or not) there.

 

There is a small shop to buy bottles of rum if you wish.
