Changes to Cheers? Heads up

While I was on the Splendor last week, I had a conversation with my friendly bartender on night about the Cheers program and purchasing drinks above and beyond the 15 limit. She told me that they are doing away with being able to purchase drinks unless you are doing it while getting a Cheers drink too. In a nutshell, you will still be able to buy a drink, but only when you are getting a 'free" drink too. So a couple could still do this by say the husband getting a Cheers drink and purchasing one for his wife, then the wife can get the free one the next round and purchase one for the husband. Just to clarify, you can purchase for anyone, it does not need to be for someone in the same cabin, this is just an example I gave.

I guess they realized people found a way to circumvent the 15 drink rule by paying a la carte at drink 14, this also has the appearance that Carnival isn't capping it from a revenue stand point but an "over-served" one. Like you said though, you can always order 2 drinks one on your cheers and one on your sign and sail card.

Actually the bartenders and drink servers have been doing this since the program changed to include drinks up to $50, at least on the cruises I have been on.

In fact on a couple of the cruises the computer even counted any over $50 per glass drinks, "sharing" drinks, and souvenir cup drinks as part of the 15 allowed.

Also if you earn the casino DOU card those drinks are also posted against the Cheers count.

I wouldn't woryy too much on what CArnival is trying to do to combat anything. They're always about 6 to 10 processes behind in addressing anything. Right now it seems they are addressing things that were prevalent in the early 00's.

But it WAS quite funny when they went in the water business to combat liquor smuggling in water bottles, while all the while you could still get full bottles of the stuff onto the ship. You just can't give away the methods on here. Then you have to switch to something new.

But I am always wondering how much it costs them to buy, store and deliver bottled water. At cost or less.

Really??? If you have Cheers, you haven't been able to purchase a drink unless you get one on the program as well????? I've not seen one other report of this.

Some people seem to be confused on the topic. I think the OP is saying that if you have cheers, they are making it more difficult to get around the 15 drinks per day mark. Some people would get to drink 13 or 14, and then they would buy the remaining drinks so they would not get cut completely off. they would typically do this by saying they were buying drinks from someone else. Now the OP is saying the only way to buy drinks for "someone else" is that you must get one for yourself threw cheers. This is to try to prevent people from going over 15 drinks per day.

You can still buy an off program alcoholic drink for your self and others, and depending on the beverage software it might count 1 of those towards your 15 per day limit, even though you paid out of "pocket".

If ordering multiple adult drinks that normally are covered by the program 1 will be put towards the 15 daily limit. Ex. a bucket of 4 beers, 1 will be no charge and count towards your 15 and the other 3 will be charged out at the full menu price (no $2 discount).

Exactly what I was trying to say. You don't have to purchase a drink unless you plan on going over the 15 per day limit. Then you can only buy one in the same transaction as getting a cheers one.

Also found out that the roaming shot in the dining room are not totally included in Cheers. I bought a round for my table and while my shot was "free", I still got hit for $5 for the souvenir shot glass.

Just off Sensation. I asked the bartender if I could buy the 101oz tube and they said yes, but 1 would count against the package and I'd have to pay for it. And can confirm the roaming dinner shots do count against your limit and they charge you for the glass. And they definitely cut you off after 15, and do not allow you to purchase anymore.

I wonder exactly how you can buy a drink "a la carte" or "out of pocket" when you have to show your S&S card to get a drink, and if you have Cheers, the POS equipment will show that. The only way I can see that being done is if you are lying to the server, telling him/her that you are buying it for a friend. That is the same dishonesty as smuggling alcohol onto the ship. If you will do that for a drink, chances are the same logic overflows into other parts of you life.

So if I get cheers and have 4 friends with me I can't buy a round without cheating? It can be done and there is nothing wrong with it.

LOL, good one. They only worry about over serving the people that bought a package. If you have no Cheers package, the only limit is your credit limit.

The price of the bottled water on the ship is considerably more per case than I would pay for it at home retail, so I don't think they are suffering too much.

I was under the impression that souvenir glasses were never included in cheers, that if you wanted the free special drink free on your plan you had to request it without the souvenir.

Sounds like more of a safety issue than a revenue issue. Carnival would be forgoing additional sales so that Cheers patrons will not overindulge.

That does not sound like Carnival. But we will see.

This may affect me negatively. I'll buy Cheers. It's worth it. But I can't drink more than about 10 alcoholic drinks in a day. Suppose I've reached my personal limit. But I want to buy a drink for my new friend. I would have to get an already-paid-for-but-unwanted drink for me as well? Sounds like a waste. Most likely, it will either sit untouched or gobbled down by my new friend. Yeah, I know that's not allowed.

Nothing dishonest about it from what I understand. The way it was described was you simply tell the bartender that you don't want it applied to your cheers package and that you'd like to pay for it, and they would then charge you for it. It's not like smuggling at all, you are purchasing a product and consuming it. No dishonesty was required.

I think it is about revenue 100% If I have cheers and my friend is in an adjacent cabin he does not need to purchase it. If I have unlimited drinks then I can share with him as long as I don't get caught. This is against the rules and Carnival has an interest in preventing it. Enter the 15 drink limit. Now that I am limited to 15 drinks Cheers is still a good deal, but if I share it I am going to curtail my own allotment and I'm less likely to be inclined, this will encourage my neighbor to purchase his own package, voila revenue.

If this were about safety then you would not be permitted to have bottles of liquor purchased from the fun shops to be delivered to your room and you would be limited to 15 regardless of purchasing a package or not.

It is for sure not the same as smuggling drinks on the boat - People are not trying to share or get something for nothing here they simply want to purchase more than 15 drinks ... Carnival should applaud people like this whom are not trying to cheat carnival out of $$ - If a person can purchase more than 15 drinks a day without a cheers plan why shouldn't a person be able to purchase extra drinks with the cheers plan - It makes no logical sense to me on why they tell people they have to stop at 15 drinks IF they buy a plan

sounds to me like they are just finally enforcing the rule they always had in place

Guests may purchase a round of drinks for themselves and friends. One drink will count towards the CHEERS! program and the remaining drinks will be charged to the guest's Sail and Sign account.

some bartenders have skirted this but I guess carnival was not happy about it and is now enforcing it
