what is an egg crate

Goodies,

If you think your bed might be too hard for you on board the ship, you can either request one from your steward when you go on board or you can fax or ring On Board Services and request one to be on your bed when you embark.

We use one at home (memory foam purchased at overstocks.com $69.95 for KING size - amazing, especially with cheap shipping they have - much better than one purchased at (and returned to) a local store), and couldn't do without it now.

Pre-requested one for recent CP cruise, but it wasn't on the bed when we arrived. Asked our steward, and he put one on the first evening. Made for a much more comfortable bed... Actually wasn't egg crate style, just a foam pad, but still comfy.

Eggcrate a thin foam overlay on to put on top of your mattress. It is not made of memory foam, but a cheap foam that does not reduce pressure but may improve comfort. I know what we pay for them where I work, and would guess that Princess pays less than $10/each for them. Here is a picture of an eggcrate overlay:

Does the pad keep you from fallling through the middle when twins are pushed together to make a queen ?

We noticed that it helped alot. My wife kept falling into the crack on night one. The next night we got our egg crate she had no problem. Made the bed super comfy as well (as comfy as a cruise ship bed can get).

chasetf - it certainly made the split between the two less noticeable. :)

Again, this was just a foam pad. It was not memory foam, and not eggcrate, but definitely softened the bed. Perhaps they *have* eggcrate, but this one wasn't. Not complaining, just the facts.

Are these egg crates disposable? Or are they reused by the cruise line when someone requests one? And if they are reused are they cleaned or disinfected in some way?

I would think that they would not be disposable and that they would be treated like mattresses. It is likely that only the sheets would be washed regularly.
