Gothenburg Archipelago

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I know most Baltic Sea cruises visit Stockholm but we are on one of the several variations on the NCL Getaway visiting Gothenburg instead. My family has great interest in going to the Gothenburg Archipelago. We've found a little bit of information on the internet but are specifically looking for an account of a cruise passenger who did it to get a better sense of timing. Has anyone done this on a cruise stop and be able to share your itinerary/schedule for the day?

Any and all tips are appreciated!

We visited Gothenburg's archipelago during a May Royal Caribbean cruise. My favorite part was strolling the streets of the villages clinging to the rocky cliffs, The houses were painted in bright colors of red, yellow, and white, very traditional cottage architecture, and were "holiday or summer homes." We stopped at a local fish market, purchased a salmon salad lunch, and enjoyed time viewing the marinas and boats. The day we visited was cold and windy, but it did not impact our enjoyment of the area. The islands can be breezy and may be cooler than the city. Those who did not have good jackets did not enjoy the day.

The islands in the southern Archipelago aren't very far out from Gothenburg. Archipelago passenger boats departure

from Saltholmen which is reachable by tram (about a 30 min journey) from central Gothenburg.

Tickets can be bough at Saltholmen terminal or on-board the ship. Boat cash and bank cards are accepted.

Brännö (Rödsten jetty) for instance is only a 20 minute boat ride from Saltholmen. If you depart at 12.00 from Saltholmen, you will have

about 4,5 hours to explore the island before you need to head back on the 16.53 boat which will connect with bus 114 to

central Gothenburg. You will then be back in central Gothenburg at Nils Ericsson terminal at approximative 17.22

giving you about 1 hour and 40 minutes to the ship departure time. If you want to have more marginal, you can head back with 15.53 boat.

Note that I do not have any personal experience from Gothenburg archipelago traffic.

Thank you both!

PNW Traveler, did you go yo Branno?

Desdichado62, would you recommend Branno over some of the other islands like Styrso? And do you think it'd be possible to visit two given our timing?
