Katakolon beaches

We will be in Katakolon for a couple of hours in July. We don't plan on using any transport, and will be walking where we would like to be. We would like to spend some time on the beach and was wondering if going to Agios Andreas was worth walking the 3km, or rather enjoy Plakes beach. We are walking/running fit, and there will be 2 teenagers in our party.

How long are you in Katakolon? Some of our party did stop at the Agios Andreas beach for an hour or so after our trip to Olympia. They enjoyed a refresher before returning to the ship but I don't know how it compares to the very nearby beach. You may want to check out if there have been recent reports of jellyfish.. We didn't hear of any last year though I have read earlier reports of some beaches being affected..

The walk is certainly doable to Agios Andreas(roughly 45 min. each way), however it's not necessarily that nice along a two lane road with not much of a shoulder/walking lane.

As mentioned ITT, there is a 'tourist' train that does a circuit with stops at the winery and beach. It's about 5(or 6) Euro per person RT.

The beach that is near the port is pleasant enough. We walked down there after returning to town for a later lunch to take a look. There are loungers/umbrellas and a small bar there.

It's right next to the breakwater/jetty, so it's not necessarily the most scenic of beaches. But the water looked nice and calm the gorgeous day that we were there. Like most in Greece, the beach was made up of small pebbles. If the desire is to lounge around sunning and wading, it can fulfill those wants.
