Casino

It's a decent casino. As for playing slots or blackjack, your odds are always better in blackjack as long as you know what you're doing. If you play correctly, the odds are .05% in the house's favor. If you don't, that number goes up significantly.

I was on this ship for the June 25 sailing. I played a few slots, but mostly blackjack. Observations:

1. For slot machines, you may have to try several times to insert your Sea Pass card to record points.

2. On the $25 a hand Blackjack tables, I was generally the only one playing. Sometimes somebody who was really, really drunk would join me and provide some comic relief.

3. I did not enjoy playing at the $10 a hand Blackjack tables. There was constant stopping mid-shoe to let a player buy in for one hand, folks with very load opinions about math and game theory, etc. This problem was better early in the morning.

4. The rules on the single deck Blackjack game are awful and are posted on a sheet of paper to the side. Those rules are, however, pretty consistent with single deck rules.

5. The multi-deck games used 8 decks and a hand shuffle. They hit on soft 17, but otherwise had very player friendly rules. This was a significant change from my cruise two years ago on Navigator.

6. The dealers who were comfortable in English were universally great. The dealers who were not comfortable in English were a real problem, and they would routinely do things like not verify that players had their intended bets out before they started to deal. The best example of this that I can think of: At a $25 a hand table a player who had been betting a couple of hundred dollars a hand very clearly and loudly said, "Give me a minute" while he adjusted his bet. The dealer dealt anyway, and neither she nor the pit boss believed the player. This was after I spoke in his behalf. This player was unknown to me.

Soooo..... I on balance enjoyed the casino. Make sure you are sober enough to know what you are doing, and make sure to force the dealer to pay attention if you wish to ask a question or do something. The table odds themselves are actually pretty good-- certainly better than some of the more expensive hotels in Vegas.

Since I can't edit my original post, I will instead reply. This caused me to write a somewhat longer review of the casino and post it on my travel blog. Happy reading.

They have pretty good variety on their slots. I gave up playing blackjack - too many people don't know how to play correctly and they screw up the table. You might look at 3 card poker and ultimate tx hold em - both fun to play and you only have to beat the dealer. Plus there's roulette - your money can last awhile on that one. We've won and we've lost - that's gambling. ;)

Apropos of almost nothing, but I think you might be able to commiserate, I recently went to Vegas with a couple of friends who didn't know how to play, and one of the people I was with hit a HARD 17 (and later didn't split A's) even after I told her that was REALLY not smart. According to her her objective was to play as long as possible (e.g. use the best strategy) and before we went she was nervous about not knowing how to play but I told her if she didn't know what to do me, the dealer, or anyone else at the table would be more than willing to tell her the best thing to do, which made her feel better. I was SO MAD . Hitting a 17 are you out of your mind...

That's nothing. My BIL sitting with me splits queens. He knew stupid as soon as he did it shaking his head. Then the dealer deals him A, A. We all had a good laugh

I've been on Liberty 3 times and my experience was that the slots were tighter than on other RC ships. Can't speak for the tables.

We thought the slots were the tightest of any ship's casino we've played (out of 20 something). It wasn't just that we didn't win, we didn't see anybody win We spent a lot of time on Crazy Money and Jackpot Jump.

As soon as someone splits 20 I'm outta there....

I was at a land-based casino a number of years ago, and in addition to the standard rules, this casino had a sign posted saying "Splitting 10's not allowed". I asked the pit boss why would the casino care about this. (I was thinking from the perspective of the casino, if a player wants to do something dumb, let them.....).

The answer was "to prevent fights at the tables".

They must have some new machines. I don't remember seeing Jackpot Jump in late November. I'll have to look for it.

Yes they took away they SkyRider games (which were our favorite) and put them there. Still plenty of older machines with mechanical problems and faded screens.

And of course, the service button and lights are perhaps the most useless items on the entire ship.
