Homer, AK - Adventure Alaska Cars experience

Has anyone rented a car from them? If so, what was your experience? They will pickup from the Spit at no charge.

We have rented from them 2-3 times with good results. Last time it seemed like there was going to be a delay in pickup so we took a cab to office to not waste time.

Pro: older Ak cars/vans so start everytime but don't have to worry about scratches or broken windshields because they all ready had them.

cars were clean.

Once while back van was parked near spit w/ keys under floor mat and left that way also.

Con: Not sure the gas was full one time but didn't check closely enough to dispute.

 

fyi, watch for eagles nest across from McDonalds, watch for moose on side of road near True Value hardware, look up and visit Norman Lowell's homestead art gallery out of town a little ways. Copy Milepost pages from library of cities to visit. Watch for cars stopped near side of road as you will see these before you see the wildlife everyone is watching.

We too have rented from them twice - great experiences both times. They picked us up at the Mariner's Memorial on the Spit and drove us back to the ship (HAL Amsterdam) upon our return. Friendly, family run business when we rented from them, I'm assuming that remains the same. They provided lots of ideas for drives, several of which we took them up on.

 

If you get the opportunity, drive out East End Road to the Fritz Creek General Store. Its a combination post office/general store/dining establishment. You'll meet the locals and it is a delightful experience. Amazing food (pizza is homemade and downright delicious!), and all the homemade sandwiches and desserts were unusual and out of this world! We frequented it often when we stayed in Homer for several land only trips since that first visit. It is that good!

 

Once, we also made arrangements for a private tour of Dr. Linda Chamberlain's mushing kennel/museum, just up East End from Fritz Creek General Store. We loved that tour - had Linda and her husband to ourselves for a personal tour of their recreational mushing kennel, got to harness the dogs for a mushing demonstration, fascinating tour of the musher's cabin and small museum if authentic mushing paraphernalia. And the dogs were just lovely - so sweet, and so excited to see the harnesses come out because they knew they were going to pull! Hearing Linda's tales of winter camping with her dogs, mushing thru the backcountry above Homer, and life on the trail was an incredible experience. Highly recommend!

 

For those fans of Discovery Channel's "Alaska the Last Frontier", you can get a tour the Kilcher Homestead. Must be arranged via telephone though, and they don't provide regular tours, just when someone is available to show you around. We did it last year when we stayed in Homer for 10 days, and were able to arrange a last minute tour one afternoon. We loved it - visiting the tiny two room cabin that Yul and his wife Ruth built that housed the entire family of Kilcher kids was an amazing look back at homesteading history. Seeing the homesteading ingenuity exhibited by this family for so many years; much of which still continues today was really great. After the tour, we walked down the steep switchback trails to Kilcher Beach where we beachcombed and enjoyed the views for a good hour. DH and I didn't personally see any of the Kilchers who are on the tv show, but our friend and traveling companion had the opportunity to meet Otto from the show. It was totally lost on her though since she doesn't watch the show - LOL!

 

If you are a fan of seafood, oysters in particular, we would highly recommend a stop at the Seafood Co-op on the right side of the beginning of the Spit as you travel out to the Spit from town. They will open some fresh oysters for you and you can sit on their deck overlooking Kachemak Bay to eat them while enjoying the amazing views. Watch for the sea otters and sealions frolicking in the surf!

 

We love Homer - would love to retire there someday. Hope you enjoy your day there as much as we love visiting!
