Why is southbound Voyage of the Glaciers more expensive?

An above comment is just not true...

The sun sets late that far North, until the end of the season.

I don't remember it being dark.

 

Since the Sail-away from Whittier (which is also very scenic) is late... Dinner is open-seating.

We walked by the dining rooms when we boarded after the 26 Glacier Tour, and they greeted us warmly, ready to seat us right away.

(We decided to go get cleaned up and dressed first)

 

We sailed from Whittier at 8.30 on August 20 2011. Sunset (though we never saw the sun at any time since boarding around 4 pm as it was low cloud and rainy) was at 9.37pm.

Yep, it certainly might seem dark, with the low, thick, clouds that seem to frequent there!!!!

Any idea on a south bound voyage what percent are doing NB/SB b2b, what percent are doing the tour and then SB and what percent are SB only?

Today we returned from our 3rd Alaska cruise - the first one was NB followed by a land tour. Our second cruise was SB with the land first, then cruise. This time we DIY for 5 days before the cruise, and sailed SB again as we believe it is much better than the NB ones. We fly from NC and the flight to Anchorage is very long as well as the time difference (4 hours) and we would rather get that over with in the beginning and have a shorter flight home after the cruise.

 

We left Whittier at 8:30 pm and it was not dark - a little drizzly but not bad at all. We had great weather the entire trip, with the exception of Glacier Bay, which has always been iffy. All 3 of our trips have been at this same time of year and every time we have had all sunshine and temps in the mid 60's - perfect. Having sailed both NB and SB we also feel the SB is so much prettier on the last day as you sail the inland passage and through Seymour Narrows - going NB it is dark when you go through this area. This cruise the captain made an announcement around 4:30 a.m. stating the Northern Lights were out and what a show it was. This is the first time we have ever seen them, but will never forget the thrill and beauty. We also could not dock in Skagway due to the recent rock slide they had and we were diverted to Haines and many of the ships tours were cancelled, however, we had booked a private tour with Beyond Skagway to go to the Yukon and they were outstanding in getting us reduced rates on the high speed ferry to Skagway and back - and it was a gorgeous day.

 

We could not ask for a better cruise - the captain and crew were some of the friendliest we have ever encountered on our 14 Princess cruises. Outstanding! Hope we can go back again as it is spectacular!
