My take on "Cheers"

Here is a question for the Cheers supporters? Do you also drink on the island?

I ask as we spent $550 in drinks on Carnival, but we also hit Senor Frogs in Freeport, a few bars in Charleston and the HRC in Nassau. If I bought Cheers, I would feel like I have to not enjoy the islands so I can get my "moneys worth" on the ship.

How say you??? (our island spending on drinks came out to around $150.)

Of course we drink on island, half the fun is trying local food and drink

We did the Pub Crawl in Key West - so drinks were included there.

We did Mr. Sancho's in Cozumel - and again our drinks were included.

My cousin did a cruise in June and they had more port days that were longer too so they spent their "booze budget" in port. Again, there are so many factors to weigh in deciding if the package is a good fit or not. We were on a 4 night cruise. Not sure if I'd do it on a 7-day - it would depend on our ports and other factors. Remains to be seen.

I'm not overly concerned if I don't get my money's worth. If I spend $100 more for both of us with cheers vs without cheers, oh well. We used to get a bottle of liquor to the room and have crappy mixed drinks all week. We saved money but it wasn't as fun. Maybe my opinion will change after the next cruise with no alchemy bar.

On my last cruise (RCCL) I was curious if the drink package was going to be worth it for us. So we added up what would would have spent if we paid per drink vs what we paid for the drink package. Yeah it wasn't pretty. We drank a lot. We're big drinkers. It was over $650 per person had we not bought the drink package. I know for our upcoming CCL cruise the $800 total we will spend on the package will definitely be worth it. But it's not for everyone and that's ok.

My husband and I have found out that Cheers is definitely for us. We may not drink 15 drinks a day(it has happened), but we average 10-12. And that was back when it was just alcohol on Cheers. :D Cheers Everyone !

One of the winning parts of our cruise was my spouse getting Cheers. It was a Christmas present, and we were in split cabins, so we only had to buy 1 (which was good, since I had 2 drinks all week - 1 the 1st day and 1 the last - b/c I had to double my motion sickness meds). He enjoyed not looking at the bills and getting what he liked. He didn't drink more than he would have, since he never had a drink before noon, except coffee. He did not drink in ports, but I think the state of the 9/3 Pride ports has been discussed enough (if he had, he might have come out less ahead). He came out about $75ish ahead over 7 days, although that was partly due to the Alchemy Bar giving me free bottles of water (when I sat at the bar with him and explained I wasn't drinking b/c of the meds - I actually preferred when they made me a free fruited/veg water, but I took whatever they gave me and sometimes it was a comped bottle of water). Alchemy was his favorite bar, and he got 3 off the menu drinks there (plus some on menu) and loved them all. He was most disappointed in dining room wine, and abandoned that by day 3 for dinner cocktails of the day or beers there.

He had about 3 coffee drinks/day (he was enjoying his morning double espressos and did decaf vanilla cappucinos at night - I had a sip of these - these were really good as is for anyone who needs something good to order at that shop), 1-2 bottles of water/day (and more if Alchemy Bar comped me one), and 4-5 alcoholic drinks/day, mostly the $10-$11 kind...he'd have 1 in the afternoon, 1 at dinner, 1-2 with me at bars/comedy clubs, and then have 1 or 2 nightcaps after I'd turn in (that became the piano or casino bar after 12:30am)...

We both agreed he loved it, and I loved him having it...and if we both had to buy b/c we were in the same cabin, we'd never do it, b/c I'd never drink more than $75 on the entire cruise, including coffee.

We have done our drinks almost every way possible except for not drinking at all, and that's not going to happen. By far, having the program when we went to Alaska was the best deal and the most enjoyable as I was able to have whatever I wanted and did. I'm the drinker in this duo and can easily cover my fair share plus some. My wife doesn't drink alcohol, but is totally addicted to soda's which means I'm buying the bottomless bubbles or she is staying home (So that's $50 or so that i could save right there). Here is how it has worked for us.

1st cruise: Ordered drinks and paid the tab. Cost about $450

Next 3 Cruises: Someone put bottles of booze in my luggage, so I made my own drinks, bought a few from the bars etc. Cost about $300 plus whatever it cost the person who stashed the bottles in my suitcase.

Alaska Cruise (not Carnival) Package for me $350, Soda's for her $50, Total $400 and we had great coffee every morning (sometimes with a kick), juice and bottled water in addition to sodas and booze. I'm confident that I covered the cost of the package by the 3rd night.

Our next cruise has me somewhat puzzled. We are leaving from Galveston, so Cheers would not apply on the first day, which is where I get my head start on them. We have to buy 2 packages, less the price of the bubbles, so about $450, plus $100 or so for the first night. $550 I can't count on the booze fairy leaving anything in my suitcase, since some mean person removed the gift he left me on our cruise from New Orleans and replaced it with a note telling me where to claim it after the cruise.

As you can see, I'm within $100 regardless of which way I go. So, should I leave the wife at home and take the girlfriend? She drinks as much as I do and we would easily come out ahead with the Cheers pacakge.
