Biker19 Posted September 26, 2017 #7 Share Posted September 26, 2017 I thought calls and texts app to app were free?? Some have reported their "regular" texts working on ships with Royal IQ when simply connected to WiFi (when using WiFi calling feature but no VOOM package) - try it but don't count on it. Some have reported being able to text WITHOUT any VOOM package. If that happened on Navigator we want to hear about it.

sailaway2joy Posted September 27, 2017 #15 Share Posted September 27, 2017 Just off the Anthem. I used IMessage to keep up with kids at home. DH bought the Voom 1 device and soda pkg I was not signed in to that. I could not receive pictures or emails but could text from my iPad Sent from my iPad using Forums

Biker19 Posted September 27, 2017 #18 Share Posted September 27, 2017 Trying to figure out if this phenomena (ability to text without being logged into VOOM) is something particular to ships that allow texting with the Royal IQ app. That seems to be the case - I think you mentioned it before that on those ships some ports opened for the Royal IQ app to work correctly also opens things enough for some other internet traffic (like texts) to get through. I think someone mentioned in some other thread that it happened on a non Royal IQ ship too, which would blow the theory. However, I don't think I've read a report like that more than once. However, I don't think I've read a report like that more than once. Some have cellular on their iPads and maybe they forgot to turn that off. Just throwing out a possible alternate explanation. Or if it is indeed the former do they have to pay for IQ for the week to be able to text using their phone texting and not the app?

sailaway2joy Posted September 27, 2017 #22 Share Posted September 27, 2017 My iPad is wifi only. I did download the free IQ app prior to boarding but did not pay extra. It must be in their system bc we cruise with Princess often and can't use their ship wifi to send texts like I was able to do last week. LarryHD2 Posted September 29, 2017 #25 Share Posted September 29, 2017 Call and text capability costs $7.95 per phone, for the entire cruise. Will the $7.95 cover future cruises or just for the one you're on at the time?
