Highlights in Auckland

What would be the highlights to see while in Auckland for one day? Anything outside of Auckland city that would be interesting as a side trip?

We loved the Auckland harbour sightseeing cruise which was great value for money. About AU$40 gets you a 90 minute guided tour around the harbour plus a return trip to Devenport - if you book yourself from the ferry terminal next to the dock.

 

Devenport is a quaint little village which takes you miles away from the bustle of Auckland after a short 15 minute ride. Depending on how adventurous you are, you could explore the village by Segway.

Depending on your time and interests, we enjoyed the sailing on an America's Cup training/racing yacht around the harbour. There are many 1/2 day food/wine tours with visits to the gannet colony. Sky Tower, etc

Those are interesting suggestions. I'll have to do some research on those places.

Devonport is lovely.

 

Great views from Mt Eden, both coasts plus the volcano crater.

 

Again, great views from that big tower. You can even jump off all harnessed up.

 

Auckland Art Gallery is certainly worth a look.

My son and I did the jump off the skytower when we were last in Auckland. It was a lot of fun.

 

In fact we will be there again in December and I have booked for my son to jump off again, and this time my daughters are going to do the walk around the outdoor ledge.

I agree with Banzaii regarding the harbour tour and devenport. Also look at the Domain wintergardens - gorgeous plants and flowers. http://www.gardens.org.nz/auckland-gardens/auckland-domain-wintergardens/ It is free and right next to the war museum and can be accessed (with a bit of a walk) from public transport.
