Jan 3 2018 eastbound crossing.

I have only done this crossing once in 2010. The open decks will be closed if it's windy but it would be unusual for them to have to be closed for the whole week.

That year it was snowing in New York and Southampton but surprisingly mild at sea.

Here is my contribution to the gallery of snow scenes from the QM2 on January 3, 2014. It was quite a shock to wake up to this after a lovely warm cruise to the Caribbean for the Christmas holiday that year. The high temperatures in New York were above 60°F during the days we were there in mid-December prior to the cruise, but that all changed upon our return. So yes, it's hard to know what to expect in New York that time of year or out on the North Atlantic for that matter.
