HalFan Posted January 12, 2018 #1 Share Posted January 12, 2018 We've often watched the sailaway webcasts from Fort Lauderdale and are wondering how to watch them in person. We will be in Florida later this month but will not be cruising this trip unfortunately. On the north side of the inlet, it looks like private residences, many with gates. Is there a way to get to the grassy area along the edge? I've seen people and benches there like a park but wonder if it is private property. It also doesn't look like there is any parking nearby. On the south side of the inlet, it looks like there might be a park as well as some sort of naval station. Can you walk anywhere close to the inlet? Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly appreciated.
Krazy Kruizers Posted January 12, 2018 #2 Share Posted January 12, 2018 From the 17th Street Bridge. BUT -- they do open the bridge on the hour and half hour and you have to get off the top part of the bridge during those times. The Condos are private and there are private houses along the channel -- can't use those areas.
Rare LMaxwell Posted January 12, 2018 #3 Share Posted January 12, 2018 17th Street Bridge would be a poor vantage point and be standing on a high traffic area with a relatively small sidewalk. The Beach is VERY much public and a great place to view. There are public beach access points. Public Beach Access Point:2100 S Ocean Ln, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 Metered parking on southbound side of street approximately 2000 South Ocean Drive, Fort lauderdale. Not a ton of metered parking so I HIGHLY suggest if you are staying in a hotel just take an Uber over. Anyways enter public beach access https://www.google.com/maps/place/Beach+Path+-+Public+Beach+Access/@26.0962915,-80.1072541,487m/data=!3m1!1e3!4m5!3m4!1s0x88d90019896c2223:0xced396b639b03e72!8m2!3d26.096733!4d-80.1075451 Walk to Jetty. About 10 minutes of walking this is basically where you will be
Rare LMaxwell Posted January 12, 2018 #4 Share Posted January 12, 2018 Whoops Public Beach Access 2100 S Ocean Ln, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33316 Sorry don't know what went wrong with prior post format south side of the inlet is John U Lloyd State park, but hours vary (until dusk). And Depending where you are staying getting there can be a real bother 6503 N Ocean Dr, Dania Beach, FL 33004
Rare Copper10-8 Posted January 12, 2018 #5 Share Posted January 12, 2018 I second the public beach suggestion, from where you can walk out towards the breakwater and get a nice shot as the ships are heading to open sea
HalFan Posted January 12, 2018 Author #6 Share Posted January 12, 2018 Thanks so much for all of your suggestions! We will be staying a bit north of Ft. Lauderdale and were planning to just drive there for the day, so the parking info is very helpful. And, the Google maps data was very useful too. Now I see the difference between Ocean Drive and Ocean Lane!
